Private Cabin Over First Class - Will It Take Off?

Wed Apr 25, 2007 10:26 pm

It appeared in today's press in the UK that 9W will be offering a "private cabin" service for their premium passengers on their services to LHR when their order for B773's is realised and the aircraft are in operation. Personally, I think that this is a great idea and I don't see why this service should utilise any more on board space than that of a lie-flat bed first class service. There may however be an issue of a certain sense of claustrophobia coming into play when one looks at the "top down" photo in the accompanying article, but apart from that and as long as the on board service is at least in line with what a first class passenger would normally expect, then I think that this could very well be an increase in service which has yet has not been attempted, although I don't deny that it may very well already have been considered.

Well, it does look really small, but givers a lot of privacy, especially to relax and sleep. It does also look as the doors will be open during a longer part of the flight, as services hours etc.

I personally think, that this is just the beginning to improve first class and those private cabins will become bigger and sure also more expensive. We also have to consider, that people will to pay the price for such a service normally are also able to pay more, even much more. Then we move relatively fast in the range of clients booking personal biz jets. Because one major disadvantage of airline travel we still do have, even with the nicest and largest private cabin: Check-In and security procedures on airport. And that is becoming worse and worse....

On your biz jet, you walk in the FBO, get quickly and personally screened, board the aircraft and up you go! Airlines tried a lot for their premium passengers to improve, but success in this matter is another thing.

Cheers

EK, QF, and SQ are all expected to offer private cabins for First Class passengers on the A388, so I don't see why this would not be a success for Jet.

The article states that these seats will be cheaper than BA's F class, and seems to be in my opinion far superior than BA's offering.

How do you think this will affect BA's yields on this route?

Depends on the in-flight and groundside service and the fact one can't earn BA miles or tier credits on 9W will probably weigh-in a good bit in favor of sticking with BA.

Whatever any airline does to so-call improve First class, it will NEVER match by miles the First that my colleauges and I offered on BOAC 707s in the early 60s! Not only did we have a large rotating hors d'euvres trolley, there were two joints of Sirloin carved to your liking at tableside. No airline today even realises not only service but product that we provided, particularly on BOAC's Monarch transatlantic services, which also included indvidual gold plated tea/coffe pots and cutlery together with exemplary stylish British service - with a smile! Oh yes, those WERE the days! Tihs new package looks to much like your own prison cell!

well, if you ask me, it looks exactly like the first class suites on EK's A345, so nothing new really.

I guess that's fine and dandy, but did BOAC actually make money off of these frills? (I'm just wondering, if they did, that's great, but want to know because I kind of doubt it) I agree that we have lost this kind of service in today's world, but there is also more to be said about fiscal strength....just my $0.02
Roger that, turning to our "other" left

They probably did. I know the US airlines did, but that was thanks to Regulation which ensured that competition was kept at bay and fares set at a level to ensure a reasonable profit on each route.

There seemed to be a common disapproval of the idea in another thread, hinging on which deck those cabins would be put in.....

So the "take off" in the thread starters topic should be changed to "get off"!!!!  bigthumbsup
