TP Starts 4th FCO Flight

Thu Apr 26, 2007 6:23 am

According to an italian press article, TAP Air Portugal is going to put the 4th daily flight between Lisbon and Rome also to accomodate the growing demand to/from Brasil. TP keen on introducing it as soon as possible probably in time for the summer peak or at most when the IATA winter timetable begins. Another source refers a curious statistical note too : about 30-40% of TP  Lisbon-Fortaleza services are filled by italian passengers. In any case, apart from the actual charter services to Nordeste do Brasil, I think Rome needs direct flights to south Brasil (GRU and/or GIG) as it used to be in the past.

The problem is that AZ moved from FCO to MXP their flight to Brazil, and even the new players TAM and BRA, decided also to fly to the business MXP market instead of FCO.

Air Italy is looking for a service from FCO to Brazil but it's not enough.

AZ last year announced it could resume FCO flights to Brazil (non stop) but i believe they are not in conditions to do this due to the lack of equipment.

Lets see if RG includes a path to FCO as it's for sure a very interesting market !

TAP's Sales Manager for Italy confirmed a few days ago the 4th daily flight to FCO. In addition to this he also reported that Italy became the 1st european market in 2006 and the 2nd worldwide after Brasil for the portuguese carrier. Flow revenue has grown by 22,59% last year in Italy and  a particularly strong revenues growth has been recorded from Italy to Brasil ( +31,49%) and Venezuela (+28,16%).

I think it's great TAP has found a good niche market with connections Europe-Brazil. I find it highly similar to the Europe-Asia Finnair network.

Any further news on the PGA takeover? That would help them increase the feed/destinations for the Brazil operation.

Seems that not only AF and LH are profiting from AZ poor service and limited network.

With the lack of space a LIS to park all those additional A330's during the day don't be surprised to see TP sending them more often to do short rotations to places like FCO, FRA, LHR, and ORY. That would introduce direct service from those cities to Brazil such as FCO-LIS-FOR.

Still waiting antitrust approval but TP has moved on with a payment of 140 million Euros. TP may have however to give up some slots in order to gain antitrust immunity.

Not so fast. Europe is still by far TP's cash cow. Just look at their financial reports. Most of TP's passengers to Brazil are leisure passengers. Europe accounts for nearly 40% of TP's revenue while Brazil accounts for about 15%.
