Peoria, IL To Get New Terminal!

Thu Apr 26, 2007 8:43 am

On April 26th, 2007 the Greater Peoria Airport Authority will announce the construction of a new terminal while the older terminal will be demolished. The plans call for a 9 gate terminal consisting of just as many jet bridges. The control tower attached to the current terminal will somehow remain intact. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2008.

This is good news as the current terminal is severely dilapidated and all of the commercial airline serving airports in Central IL have much better facilities. You only to have look 40 miles down I-74 at BMI to know this.

I hope this is true. As much as I like my home airport of BMI, I am forced to fly out of PIA occasionally due to lower fares or better connections. The Peoria facility really is bad. Given their growth form both AA and Alligiant, they really deserve a new terminal., I look forward to this being completed.

Would it be cheaper to build a whole new terminal or to restore an old one? I'd imagine that a new terminal would likely attract new airlines but restoring the old one would probably be cheaper.

Good news for our PIA friends. When we built our new terminal here at MLI I'm sure it probably helped in attracting new airlines and passengers, so hopefully the same will hold true with PIA. Are there any renderings available to see what they have in mind?

I was just checking to see if a thread had been statrted on this topic. I have a question, hopefully, someone can answer. www.week.com reports the new terminal will be built west of the existing one. My memory is hazy, havent been to PIA in awhile, to get a better idea of the proposed layout, is west towards the rental car area or the other direction?

While the terminal is old, i have never thought it was that bad. I would like to see NW upgrade PIA-MSP to RJs

That terminal in Peoria is a true gem of its day. I hope they don't replace it with a generic bells and whistles airport.

The terminal will be built where the car rental and the old postal sort center is located. Supposedly the terminal will be built using classic red brick. The airport wants to go with a different approach and keep a classic look. Sounds cool.

Good news for PIA. I am kinda hoping we will get a new terminal here in LAN. It is really old and you could make it a lot sleeker and maybe attract new Airlines.

exactly. i like the airport terminal and think it works just fine as it is now. they could almost just restore parts of it and make it work just the same.

i think 9 gates is overdoing it though. it seems like they survive just now on 5.
if assumptions could fly, airliners.net would be the world's busiest airport

For checked luggage, the xay machines are in front of each airlines ticket counter. That really cuts down on floor space especially in the early AM hours when so many flights leave.

To go through security, there is a hallway to the left of the ticket counter, that one goes to, to go through security.

PIA is the only airport I have ever been to that only has vending machines for food andd drinks behind security. So if there is a last minute delay, to and from ORD, one ahs to leave and reenter security to get more than vending machine food.
In addition, PIA, is the only airport I have been to security closes down at periodic intervals through the day. I was told this was due to no flights arriving or leaving.

I hope the food situation, is addressed, in the new terminal.

Lastly, PIA. is the only airport i know of that also is the bus station for the city. On the existing lower level which is baggage claim, a few steps away from the baggage carosuel, is the bus ticket counter, and sometimes you can see some seedy people waiting for the bus. it is my understanding that the TSA expressed concern about the issue. However, I dont know if that is true and, if so, what was done to deal with the concerns.

PIA is also the only airport, I know of, where there is no taxi line. On a few occassions I have flown in there hours late, at night, and the rental cars had closed. This despite having called ahead to alert them to my delay. It created a further delay when I had to call and wait for a taxi to take me to the hotel. In short, i have tried to avoid flying in there at all costs. Any day now UA will start nonstop IAD-SPI and that might be an attractive alternative to IAD-ORD-PIA.

SBN has that too

I thought the original plan was to just bring the baggage claim up to the first floor, like BMI

This is probably the biggest reason why they have decided to build a new terminal as opposed to remodeling the current one. At TOL, it was determined they could remodel the airport and be able to put the CTX behind the counter with a few belts then building a whole new terminal. The remodling cost wasn't even close to that of building a full new terminal. I suspect the cost of remodeling and switching things around there is something that of at least 3/4 of what it would cost to build a new terminal. This is just a guess though.

I hope SPI-IAD works out. Will this be one daiy flight or two? SPI doesnt have a good history like MLI,PIA and BMI of beign able to support airservice....even CMI does better

As of Dec '06 the TSA screening area is behind the ticket counters, which seems to be very convenient for everyone involved including the passengers, airline agents, and the screening officers.

The bus station is indeed located at the airport and let me tell you, we get some dandy individuals up from the lower level where the bus terminal is located. The airport gets grants to provide bus transportation so in spite of the many complaints from the passengers and the law enforcement officers about unruly and sometimes intoxicated bus riders, the bus station stays. It's interesting when newly freed prisoners stroll around the airport terminal waiting for the Trailways bus. You know it's prisoner release day when you see 3 or 4 guys wearing the same attire consisting of grey sweat pants, white T-shirt, and black Chuck Taylor's roaming around the gift shop looking for smokes.

It will be one flight operated by Mesa. That alone, considering their service, is cause for concern. The aircraft used for SPI-IAD comes into SPI in the late afternoon ffrom ORD and goes out SPI-IAD. Now this flight was started to avoid the ORD hassel. However, the aircraft will be coming from ORD so any delays there will greatly affect the IAD flight. I indeed hope things all work and it does well.

When Corpus Christi built a new terminal at CRP, it was about double the cost of refurbishing the existing terminal, but a refurbished terminal woulnd't have lasted as long before needing to be replaced. Serious corrosion was found in the structural steel early on in a project to modernize the restrooms. The old terminal almost 50 years old and rather spread out. There was only one jetway that Soutwest had installed. The new terminal is much more attractive and compact, and all gates have jetways to board aircraft. The maximum distance from the check in counters to a gate has gone from over 1,000 feet to under 300. Considering the benefits and longevity of having a new efficiently laid out treminal, replacing an existing terminal is often the better choice.

What is the largest airliner to fly into Peoria? Any mainline equipment or just RJs?
There's nothing quite like a trijet.

PIA actually has eight gates, though only six are in use. Of these, five have jetways - NW is the only one that still uses props and doesn't use a jetway for its Saab 340's.

After looking at the schedule, I think IAD-SPI wont work. First the plane flows from ORD. Two, the flight is great for Europe connections but that isnt what SPI needs. It needs an AM flight to IAD and PM flight from IAD. The purpose of the flight should be day trips to IAD for state and federal govt workers and lobbiests.
