Request Upgrade On AA?

Thu Apr 26, 2007 12:16 pm

I just joined AAdvantage a couple of months ago and I booked a trip to RSW from STL for the end of May. I was wondering how do I request an upgrade and what would be the best way to do that?

I normally do it upon check-in at the self-service kiosk.

If you have an AAdvantage account on AA.com, you can request one electronically through the website. Just log in and go to "Current Flight Information," then pull up the record for your RSW-STL flight. At the bottom of the page is a "request upgrade" button. You'll be notified by email if the upgrade clears, although given your recent entry into the program, that probably won't happen until you're already at the airport.

If you've just joined AAdvantage and don't have any level of status (Gold, Platinum, Executive Platinum) your chances are pretty slim (although on a leisure flight like RSW-STL they are much better than they've be on a flight to New York or Los Angeles.) I'm a Platinum and my upgrades go through maybe 40-50 percent of the time... but I only request them on flights of two hours or more.

I figured that but I thought I would try anyway. Thanks for the help.

Keep in mind that to upgrade in advance on an AA flight, you need to be travelling on a full-fare ticket. If you want to upgrade, you'd have to do it at the self-serve kiosk the day of departure if they have seats available. I'd say you'd have a shot of being able to buy an upgrade though - STL is not that busy of a hub for AA, so a lot less traffic going through there, plus it's not a long flight so it's quite possible a lot of Plats and Golds will save their upgrades.

On my recent trips to LIM, I requested upgrades for each of the long portions (internationals don't qualify) across the US at the time I purchased my ticket. My request on the overnight SFO-MIA came through (February) as did the one for the LAX-MIA (April). However, for the return trips, I didn't stand a chance as a Gold status member.
For the one from LAX, they EMAILED me when the upgrade became available, which is stupid because it happened a couple of hours before the trip. Keep in mind that I worked the whole day and then caught an SFO-LAX flight, so I couldn't have checked my email.

On AA, you get to request upgrades when making a reservation as long as you have a certain status. For a year or so, I had a bank of upgrades in my account that I could not use because I wasn't even Gold. The moment I qualified, I started using them, but it's hard to beat out all the Platinums and Execs.
