Convair 580 In Fiji

Thu Apr 26, 2007 6:24 pm

Just got my flight details for my forthcoming Fiji Trip (alas, work I'm afraid) and I'm booked on an Air Fiji Convair 580 for the SVU-NAN return leg.

Anybody here flown one of these beasts either in Fiji or elsewhere?

I think it is one of the Air Chathams plane, built in the 50's. That probably tells you enough. Don't expect too much.

NZ747 has. I remember hearing about it when he got back from Fiji in the December holidays. I'm sure he'd shed some light if you PM him  Wink

Don't know too much about the fun of flying in a superb vintage prop do you?

I, and many others, would give their eye teeth and more for a chance of a ride in such a superb historic aircraft

What do you want to know about the airplane? It's been years and years, but I still remember some things.

True, it will be newer than the DC3 I flew in last year in AKL though.......DC3 trip was ace!!!

Just some up to date stuff really about the whole experience really, anyone done that SVU-NAN run in one?

Had a hilarious anecdote or two about the Twin Otters they use on this run!!

Oh, I can't comment on that particular aircraft or the route. It is a good, solid airplane though. I used to enjoy flying them, and they made me the deaf, gray haired person that I am today.

Get a window at the very aft end. That will provide you a good view---clear of most of the wing----and will get you away from that cyclic prop-beat.Even with synchronization there is still a nearly constant cycle of beat and vibration sometimes (comically) flowing from side to side seemingly riding on the wing-box structure between each engine!
You can always walk forward to take some photos from a front window for some "prop-shots"-----and leave the suffering to someone else!

Hope you have a great adventure! bigthumbsup

Yep, went on it in January from Suva to Nadi. The crew were Air Chathams crew except the local Air Fiji flight attendant.

Flown all types SUV to NAN route, and the best to date was Air Pacific's 737-800, about a 15 min flight. The ATR42-500's (crewed by mount cook crew) are very nice also. It's a shame you didn't book Pacific Sun (Air Pacific). Fares are almost half the price. I try to avoid Air Fiji if I can. Don't fly the Harbin, it will scare the shit out of you. Flights are always delayed, and everytime my ticket (which I pick up at Nadi Airport) seems to have been misplaced...)

Had many interesting times on that route. Blood smeared on the windscreen ( I hope from a bird), Engine failure on approach to Nadi. Fuel leaking from wing (noticed by pax just prior to our take off), being almost booked on their fatal flight that crashed killing all in 1999, pax screaming because of the turbulence from the high volcanic terrain, stoned looking pilots, cockroaches all over the cabin..im sure theres more.

Have fun

Air Fiji Convair 580 for the SVU-NAN return leg.

Is that Suva-Nadi, or Savusavu-Nadi? SUV, or SVU? Just wondering. I flew NAN-SVU-NAN myself back in '99 on the twin otters, but I had no idea there were CV580s operating it now! The twin otters were an experience themselves. We flew Air Fiji in one direction and Sunflower Airlines (now Sun Air) in the other. I don't remember much of the return flight because I was sick as a dog from something I'd eaten, but the outbound was loads of fun because we were flying directly towards a rather ominous looking bank of clouds. The landing strip in SVU was also interesting--just a strip of asphalt, really. The terminal was more of a shack than anything else. The pilots were cheerful Ozzies.
Anyway, I'm sure you'll tell us all about it. Big grin

Plenty comfortable. A lot of vibration but it is a pleasant vibration. Much deeper than that of modern turboprops. The last row of seats are the best, followed by the second to last. As you go forward of these rows you lose more and more visibility outside. I used to fly on them often out of PIT in the seventies with AL.

SVU.

Flight might get changed to an Air pacific ATR due to logistical issues in country.

You'll get the full TR regardless  Smile

Haha, they're ok, just standards are a bit low. The Convair is maintained in New Zealand and crewed by kiwi's, so you'll be sweet. Like I said above, just try and avoid the Harbin. The Otter isn't so bad. I used to fly with Air Fiji on about 6-10 flights a year, but now only 2 to 4 times. So I guess I've had too many accounts of bad flights and service. Only thing I like about them is that one of their staff at Nadi seems to always know my last name, before he searches for the ticket that never got sent to them by head office...weird haha

But don't worry, you'll have an experience an a half. I look forward to your entertaining trip report about it  Wink Take pics!

The Convair is on a wet lease. It replaces an Embraer Brasilia which got taken back by the lessor because of unpaid leasing fees. The company won't be around for much longer I dont think.
