United To Add Winglets To 757 (?)

Thu Apr 26, 2007 10:26 pm

Found this on another discussion board...unfortunately there was no source mentioned but it seems legit. It was in another article about the AA 767 winglets.

Quote:
Meanwhile, United is expected to become the latest major 757 operator to announce selection of the blended winglet to reduce fuel costs. The airline, which currently operates 97 757-200s, is expected to start by retrofitting aircraft from September onwards. Other 757 winglet customers include American Airlines, Continental Airlines and Northwest Airlines, while LaMoria adds that others including Delta Airlines are “very interested.”

Maybe that mystery UA winglet-equipped 757 really did exist...

Indeed. Actually its not a mystery except the company has decided to sit on the news for quite some time. The Hawaii etops B757s along with p.s. aircraft are due for retrofitting commencing September.

So I take it only the ETOPS (incl. p.s.) 757s will be receiving winglets, or do they plan to eventually mod the entire fleet?

There is an article at today's FlightGlobal, about the planned AA 767 winglet program and the UAL 757 winglet program as well:

Good news for UAL. Are there any plans for UAL to retrofit them onto their 763's?

29 aircraft for now.

13 p.s., and 16 Hawaii ETOPS birds - basically the ones that operate the longest stage lengths and have most to gain from winglets.

Fair use:

American plans to install winglets on its entire fleet of 58 767-300ER aircraft, saving at least 290,000 gallons of fuel per aircraft per year.

Thats a whopping 16,820,000 gallons saved per year at current fuel prices.
