Air Jamaica - Delta End Code-shares

Fri Apr 27, 2007 8:36 am

While not fully unexpected, Air Jamaica has decided to terminate its code-share with Delta with mere 7 days notice effective May 1st 2007.

Now lets see how long it takes Air Jamaica to file for revised code-share authorities with another major US carrier. The carrier has been in on/off talks with United for a few years now.

Isn't JM still struggling financially? Does the termination of the code share agreement just mean the end of JM putting their code on DL flights or does it also include DL no longer putting their code on JM flights?

Its a joint termination. Neither partner will have a code-share relationship with the other.

The end of a fruitful relationship that has benefited Delta. Before Delta started operations to Jamaica, JM had 3 daily flights to ATL that fed into DL feeder service. DL started Jamaica with a B737. With the end of Butch Stewart's ownership, DL took advantage and upgraded service to Jamaica with a B767 and B737/MD88. JM currently has one flight to ATL, which has been cancelled on frequent occasions due to load. Rumours is they will now start ops from JFK-MBJ.

The truth is DL did to JM what major US carriers do to smaller ones. Use code share to get a foot in into the market "supplement" that market with their own AC which generally is of comparable size and then increase seats and load on the route which in turn makes the codeshare in many cases move from smaller to larger to larger killing smaller. JM has a plan to bounce back especially with fierce Jamaican loyalty behind them, and increased EC loyalty too. Lets wait and see. The 757's may help do the trick (June 1) and from what I am hearing or not hearing the A320's may yet remain.
