Smoking On European Carrier?

Sat Apr 28, 2007 3:24 pm

An attendant on this 2007 flight makes an announcement briefly before landing (it appears to be in German). Then in English, he says "Ladies and gentlemen, may we now ask you to extinguish now your cigarette and adjust the back rest of your seat and your table to an upright position" I wonder if he also mentions smoking in the German announcment.

Airbus A340-2000 crosswind landing!!!

Could this be LH? If not, any idea which carrier? Is smoking still allowed on certain sectors or charter flights (how about Turkish Airlines)? Can anyone identify the city this flight lands in? Wouldn't passengers be asked to fasten seat belts, stow tray tables and bring seats fully upright at the beginning of descent? This announcement takes place less than 2 minutes before landing. So if I was having a cigarette, would the attendants not stop me until then?

Could it be that the information read out was simply outdated and it really was a non smoking flight?

What makes you think it might be TK? You have no idea about Turkey are you? I am highly offended by this comment because I know exactly why you thought it would be TK....

Smoking has been banned on TK since 1998.

Besides, TK''s final approach announcement is as follows:

"Ladies and gentlemen, in a few minutes, we will be landing at Istanbul Ataturk Airport. Please check once again that your seat belts are fastened, your seats are upright and your tray tables are closed. Thank you"

That is LH and it is a rather old clip. LH did have some 340-200s in the early 90s and that was whe smoking was still alllowed on flights.

Luckily, it is no longer allowed for many years. They should forbid clapping after landings as well, BTW.

Pardon my ignorance, but just how would you be 'highly offended' by this remark?

I'm amazed that in this day in age people feel that being offended is some sort of 'crime.' As they say about driving licenses in th US, 'It's not a right'

Because, he knew it was a European airline and thought it would be TK because Turkey is the most underdeveloped country in Europe where smoking might still be allowed.... Your ignorance pardoned...

It is indeed German.

LH is the only German airline that operated all A340 variants except the -500.

You can rest assured that in all Europe, smoking is no longer allowed on board any aircraft. And please don't single out one airline if you don't know the airline at all, like you did with TK.

Why? I find that it's a way to thank the pilot for an outstanding landing. IMO if a pilot does an excellent job, he should be fully acknowledged.  Wink

Understood. Maybe I over estimated the original posters mental aptitude, seeing as the video description clearly states the airline is LH.

The reference to LH and JFK is there. However, the description did not feature when I originally accessed this link.
Sorry Turkish Wings - I've been to Turkey and love it. No offense intended, but I did think that smoking may have still been allowed on Turkish Airlines.  duck  Thank you for the clarification on that point. It seems that the video is old footage, just posted this year - hence my enquiry.

Notice the past tense in my statement. Obviously they don't fly the -200 anymore, but overall, they did operate all A340 variants with the exception of the -500.  Wink

because it is stupid. Pilots are professionals and not artists All landings that are no crash landings are outstanding. On the other hand, I would eventually clap after a survived crash landing, because that would be really outstanding.

Is there a law that says airlines must not allow smoking onboard?? Could a EU airline suddenly allow it if they wanted?? I am against smoking onboard but I am just wondering if it is self governing or is it actually the law.

"Smintair" which stands for "Smokers International Air" is the brain fart of a Duesselforf business man who got some media attention. As trains go (fortunately) smokeless as well this autumn, he will start a smokerail or railsmoke as well. He may end up owning some Shisha lounges.

Anyway, he will never get the permission to start such an airline, especiallysince we get finally some anti smoking legislation. in Germany as well. Too many legal obstacles. He could try to run it as a club, but then he still needs staff. Staff will have the right to a smokefree workplace. He can make smoking a condition in the contracts, however when there is a law that gives employees the right for a smokefree workplace, a worker can sign what he wants, he still could insist on a smokefree workplace and would win that case.

Anyway, this airline will never take off, for many more reasons than shown above.

The guy said was it TK so whats wrong with that ??? He was asking a question and wasnt implying that it was good or bad. He was asking a question. He could have said the same if he thought it was AZ,LY,OA,TK or whatever!!! He was not making a statement about anything else . You just took it the wrong way . There are different attitudes to smoking between Western Europe and the Balkans/Turkey so one could be forgiven to think that a Balkan or Eastern airline might have allowed smoking . Living in a country where there is a total smoking ban inside public areas I hate it when I go to the Balkans to visit family and have to sit in smoke and I think they are behind when it comes to public health but Im sure my family who smoke would disagree.

Sure can . . .

The thread went off the deep end with the third reply, and continued to remain more a host of personal attacks and 'apparently' hurt feelings. Rather than using SD feature, the thread degenerates into a bash fest. Great work.
