SIA Changi Terminal 2/3 Flight Split Details

With the opening of Singapore Changi Terminal 3, Singapore Airlines’ operations will be split roughly 50-50 between Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. The flight distribution for departing flights will be as follows:

DEPARTING FLIGHTS FROM TERMINAL 2:
India
China
South East Asia*
Middle East* including Turkey and Egypt
South Africa
*Flights operating through Dubai to Moscow and flights operating through Bangkok to Japan will depart from Terminal 3. See below.

DEPARTING FLIGHTS FROM TERMINAL 3:
Australia
New Zealand
Hong Kong
Taiwan
Japan
South Korea
USA/Canada
Europe
Singapore-Bangkok-Osaka
Singapore-Bangkok-Tokyo
SIN-Dubai-Moscow

ARRIVING FLIGHT OPERATIONS FOR SINGAPORE AIRLINES
Because SIA aircraft undertake mixed rotations (ie arrive from Australia and then rotate to South East Asia), arriving flights into SIN will NOT follow any pattern. Flights will arrive into the terminal WHERE THE AIRCRAFT IS DUE TO NEXT DEPART FROM. The terminal of arrival will be made known to passengers 6 hours prior to arrival (on the IFE system) and subsequently confirmed 2 hours before the flight is due to land. Passengers will be processed in the terminal they are due to arrive in.

Meeters and Greeters based in Singapore who wish to pick up friends and family at Changi Airport will have to check on the internet or via telephone which terminal their friends are arriving at.

There are will be 2 airside and 1 landside train connections between Terminal 2 and 3. Journey time will be approximately 2-3 minutes. Transfer passengers will have to make use of the trains to make Terminal 2-3 transfers. Alternatively, walking from Terminal 2 to 3 will take about 5-10 minutes landside (direct route using the underground route) and 30-40min airside as one would have to make a U-shape journey via Terminal 1.

Hopefully the above provides some degree of clarity to everyone about the new arrangements for Singapore Airlines beginning in January 2008.

What does everyone think about this arrangement?

I think it is silly for flights departing to the south like Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, USA/Canada to depart on the northern runway side, and flights to the north like India, China, Middle East (including Turkey and Egypt) to depart from the southern side, it will just cause more ATC delays in the air and on the ground.

I don't think which runway the flights depart from will depend on the terminal they depart from. There are many flights which depart the C gates from Terminal 1 and make the long taxi to the runway near Terminal 2 for departure. Likewise there are many SQ flights that arrive at the runway next to Terminal 1 and make the long taxi to Terminal 2.

There is going to be a lot of confusion at first for meeters and greeters. The departure thing makes sense.

For an airport of Changi's caliber I'm really surprised at this. This is going to be a pain in the butt.
However, it clearly shows you where Changi's prioritites are and what their main market is: Connecting traffic.
They would not be able to have this sort of arrangement if most of their traffic was O&D, and especially if they had a sizable domestic market. Since most people flying to SIN are either connecting or don't have anyone waiting for them other than a taxi driver, this is somewhat of an acceptable arrangement.

Thats not the point... If you are on a 777 flying in from Adelaide and if it is to be rotated for a flight to Penang, the aircraft will dock in Terminal 2. For a passenger flying from Adelaide to London, they would have to make that journey from T2 to T3 where their 747 will be waiting. For airport nuts like us, it is not a problem, but imagine someone flying out of Australia for the first time.

I don't expect SIN to be like a transfer-nightmare CDG is, but I would rather SQ concentrate the ENTIRE ops into one terminal rather than having it split up like that. I wonder what is their reason for this?

I suspect that air-side it will be a lot more efficient than the likes of CDG/LHR/FRA  Smile
I'm sure the air-side transfer between terminals will be well marked, easy and efficient.
I agree, 1 terminal only would be ideal, but do they have the realestate for that and at what cost?
And if you have to walk the same distance between 2 terminals as you would between gates within 1 terminal, does it really make that much of a difference?

I agree. When I read the threadstarter I though that should be ok as should I choose to fly SQ from MAN - Australia again then I would be using the one terminal (terminal 3) which makes it convenient. However the arrivals thing may well bugger that up! Also, just imagine if SQ is having problems with several incoming flights being delayed. They may choose to re-roster several aircraft in order to minimise knock-on delays and therefore your arrival terminal changes mid-flight! Obviously from a utilisation point of view they cannot have separate fleets for Terminal 2 served regions and terminal 3 served regions, each B772ER, for example, could be used to any B772ER destination. Incidentally, in 2004 I flew BKK - DXB - MAN on EK and travelled on the same A332 for both sectors.

Sounds very complicated and Changi is the only place I have ever heard of such a thing. Then Asia is the only region of the world where a 777 is used on intercontinental flights and then a local regional flight, a smart miss use.

Are you suggesting Changi is the only place where you have to change terminals between flights? Because if you are then you haven't been out much.

However, SIN has loads of signs, and they know a lot of people will be confused, but they will do their best to help. On the flights, right before you land, it says what flights will leave from what gate (for the connecting passengers on the IFE), and it will definantly have say how to get to the other terminal. In the terminal itself there is loads of screens and signs.

Does anybody know if this is just temporarly, because T3 might not be open? Anybody know when T3 will open?

Hmm - I often fly LHR-SIN-KUL and it seems this route is becoming less and less attractive.

It works well now especially in 'F' as its great to get out of the London flight and straight into the shower followed by a nice dinner before catching the KL shuttle.
Terminal changes will undoubtably reduce this to a stressful rush to change planes and may also make me consider reverting to MH's 'F' on the Shuttle sector (and perhaps also reverting to route LHR-KUL-SIN as my trips are almost always 'triangular' (visiting both KL and Singapore)).

One of the IST flight(SQ490) goes through DXB so wouldn't it be at Terminal 3? Is this just for the non stop flight on Fridays(SQ496)

Yes, meeters and greeters will find it painful at the beginning but lets not forget other transfer dependent airports DFW(by sheer size only)SYD,BNE spring to mind.
Airlines Flown : QF,NW,AA, CX, AC, MH, SQ, DJ, NZ, TG, PG,US, FJ, J8, AN, DD, JQ
