Cubana In Europe

Sat Apr 28, 2007 8:20 pm

What destinations do Cubana currently serve in Europe? Is the London route still served by leased aircraft, or has it been Il96-ed yet?

From my impressions while staying in Cuba a few days ago:

LIS (IL6)
ORY (IL9, also served from SCU)
LGW (UX 763)
MAD (IL9 and UX 763)
MXP (IL9)

I thought they stopped flying transatlantic with the Il-62 (LIS, LPA). Even with Il-96s I'd love flying Cubana to Cuba. Their website www.cubana.cu isn't much of a help finding schedules etc so far. Anyone know if there's a website with booking options?

When using its own aircraft, I think CU only flies scheduled to MAD and charter flights to LIS but no other destinations in Europe. Maybe someone else has more insight in this.

Amadeus has most of the timetables and schedules online, but I can't access the site currently; it seems to be having some internal problems.

To my knowledge Cubana only uses the IL-96 to MAD once or twice a week, then they either fly the chartered Air Europa 767-300 the rest of the week or code-share on Air Europa's A330-200 flight. I believe LGW and ORY are scheduled from HAV using the chartered Air Europa 767-300.

Back when Cubana leased the Novair A330-200 and Air Atlanta 747-400 the routing was HAV-MAD-ORY-MAD-HAV.

As for the IL-96 it looks like it is used to EZE and MAD as well as other destinations in South American I'm assuming.

I'm having the same problem. The information I posted above came from Flightstats which only give me information from yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Good to know I was correct here.  Smile

Last summer the Cubana IL-96 came in on Saturdays instead of Fridays.

And if I am correct I believe the chartered Air Europa 767-300 is EC-JJJ.

Currently CUB1460, type Yak-42, is en route Havana to Gander and is probably inbound to Europe after that - maybe Shannon?

That's right, but one week out of each three EC-JJJ is operating Air Europa flights, being changed the next monday and going back to Cubana's operation. as I know, these flights are being operated using CU's cabin crew.

IIRC, before having the UX 767-300, Cubana used in their MAD flights an AOM DC-10, later on it became into a veteran JAT DC-10 and finally the Novair A332 (SE-RBG), which went to Air Madrid once CU started using their own metal and the UX B763.

Don't forget the Air Atlanta 747-400 TF-AMI that operated for a short while.

The 767 operations of Cubana are operated by UX (as you said) and BP wet-leased aircrafts. The flights to MXP, FCO and ORY are operated by the Italian airline. The flight to UK are UX.

Code share?? What is the other flight number then as when its a code share there must be a @ next to the flight number if it is not a CU crewed flight.

This sounds like an interesting one. Maybe it is heading to Russia for maintenance / sale.

I'm looking forward to flying Cubana next week - CCS-HAV-SDQ - both flights operated by IL-62s!  Smile

I thought that CU flies regularly to SVO. Were these flights discontinued? Also, did CU offer scheduled flights to Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall?

Not that I am aware of. I believe the only direct connection between Cuba and Russia is operated by Aeroflot with 767-300 aircraft. The flight used to be operated by IL-96 aircraft which is what I saw back in 2002 when I visited Cuba.

Out of interest, what are you basing this on? I cannot seem to find any accidents for this aircraft type, other than a brief spell when they were grounded to check a braking gear.

...so how many have crashed, how many fatalities have their been and how many major disasters have involved them? Hmm, none me thinks, funny that. Yes, they have some issues and were withdrawn until they could be checked and amended which is the only sensible thing to do, but just because they are Russian does NOT mean that they are going to be death traps which keep falling from the sky. Get yourself out of such a stupid mindset, it's record is on a par with the 777 and A340.  Yeah sure

Oh, let me guess.... Because its Russian??

There's always one - they always turn up in any discussion involving Russian airliners. Shame.

Actually, I've just realised it was you that said in another thread: "This outfit (Etihad) have been quoted as being the Ryanair of the Middle East, poor load factors, poor service, and to be honest will never compete with the likes of EK!"

So, that'll be the second stupid thing you've said this week with no back-up. You are making a great contribution to a.net so far.

So I was right as well. CU only flies the IL96 to MAD on a scheduled basis and LIS on charter basis. I only didn't know about their other European flights being operated with 767 aircraft from other airlines. I have also seen photos of the CU IL96 in CCS on myaviation.net and also remember reading it somewhere that CU will also use the IL96 on the HAV-CCS-HAV rotation due to the closer political ties the two countries have now.

Yes I do remember seeing this on Amadeus last time I was planning my trip there. Not sure if it is every day though.
