Older Aircraft Still In Service?

Sun Apr 29, 2007 8:14 am

In the 1960's and 70's in the USA, I traveled a lot on short/medium range piston and turbo powered aircraft before jets took over the job. Some of these were: Fairchild F-27, F-227(Ozark), Convair 340 (Delta),Convair 580 (Frontier and North Central and a bunch more), Convair 600 (Central), Viscount (United), and others I can't remember. Maybe a DC-6 or 7( not short range). I am wondering if any of these are still operating, maybe as freighters, and, if so, what airports in my general area am I likely to see them. I live in Alabama and could go, say, as far as Miami as an example. You all probably know how many are left and where they are (such smarts on this forum, I am continually amazed). But I couldn't go to all the places. Would like to see some of them birds once more.

The old man.

What? Not happy with the local L-39s?

Seriously, I don't know of any of these types still being operated in AL. MIA or one of the gulf coast airports is probably the best semi-local bet on this. I'm probably going down to MIA tomorrow to meet MiamiAir - I'll ask him if any of these are still operating there. Seems like last time I was at MIA about 2 years ago there were several Convair freighters and at least one DC-6.

In our area(I live in St. Clair County just south of Ashville) the best(non museum) classics I know of are at PLR. Ed Stringfellow has quite a collection including an executive configured Staggerwing that's beautiful. If you buy enough lumber from him he might even give you a ride.
Where are all of my respected members going?

Northern Air Cargo still has DC6s flying about Alaska. As does Everts Air Fuel. There are photos in the A-Net database.

Also, Everts has some C-46 Commandos still in service.

Well if Alaska made the list I'll throw on the Yukon and the NWT, as Air North has four HS748s based in Whitehorse, Yukon. Also, a trip to the Yukon MUST include a stop at the DC-3 weather vane. Also, there is Buffalo over in Yellowknife, NWT, which still operates a fleet of DC-3s and DC-4s...

Here in Tucson there are daily flights on 737-200s by Sierra Pacific. There are usually two of them parked in the cargo area during the day.

The Convairs that you see at DAB are parked there (storage) and no longer fly. I wish they still operated out of here!!

Possibly, many DC-3's and C-46's operating as a passenger or freighter in Venezuela and Bolivia.

Thanks for the updates and especially for the picture of the F-27. I assume this was once a passenger aircraft converted to a freighter. Anyone know its present route? Thanks again.
