Alitalia Strike?

Sun Apr 29, 2007 11:56 am

http://www.alitalia.com/EN_EN/footer/news/nw_2007_04_27.htm

I noticed this advisory at the Alitalia website and I was wondering if anyone knew exactly why all these flights were being canceled. I'm assuming that it's a strike, which is nothing new for them. However, I am a bit worried because on the 3rd of may I'm flying with AZ 645 EWR-FCO and then on the morning of May 4th connecting to AZ 432 FCO-MUC.

My flights aren't currently listed as being canceled, but since I don't know the details of how these strikes operate, I wonder if anyone knows if there is a possibility that any of these flights might be added to the list later this week. Once they decide who will strike and publish a list of affected flights, do these ever change at the last minute?

If anyone can supply any more information about what the reason for the cancellations is and about what the chances are that my flights will operate as normal, I'd appreciate the info.

Thanks!

The cancellations are because of a day-long strike by flight attendants (so what's new??), who are currently in contract negotiations. Do employees of AZ realize they're going down in flames??

I think your EWR-FCO should be OK but. although it's not listed, you may have some disruption FCO-MUC.

Good Luck!

In the printed Alitalia timetable there is a section called Cancellations or Strikes, at least something similar, and there you will find all the flight numbers that will be canceled during a strike. EWR-FCO will be fine because that's intercontinental and FCO-MUC will operate at least once daily because that is international.
The majority of domestic flights is axed, as well as some flights to European destinations that are served multiple times per day or by other Skyteam partners.
You can get a printed Alitalia timetable from all Alitalia offices worldwide as well as all airports served by AZ.

I miss handling AZ with all their strikes, if it's not baggage handlers it's crew! Give it a few days and they'll all be back to normal  Smile

Thanks for the info SCOTRON11
I have many AZ timetables with their policy about strikes, so thanks to the others for reminding me about that.

This day long strike - is it for May 3rd?

I tried to check the Italian news sites online, and all I found were archived articles about an April 23rd strike-nothing so far about a sciopero on the 3rd of May.

Since I'll be flying FCO-MUC on the 4th of May, and it is on Alitalia Express, I'm hoping that I won't have too much of a problem continuing on to MUC, especially if the strike is only one day on the 3rd. However, I do know that it can take a few days for any airline to get back to "normal" (which I use loosely when speaking of AZ), after any type of disruption, so I guess I'll have to wait and see.

I'm just a bit more concerned than usual because (1) my tickets are booked using Delta Skymiles, which means that the alternatives to rebook me on alternate carriers are limited and (2) my arrival in MUC is timed to meet a friend flying in from Malawi, so I'm guessing that he and my other friends there may be waiting around at the Airbraeu restaurant drinking beer for quite a while until I get there.

I was finally able to find a posting in Italian that admitted that the cancellations were due to Flight Attentant strikes as Scotron11 indicated earlier.

Very strange that on the English version of the site, there is no explanation for the strike, only a list of flight cancellations.

I find it quite interesting that "forti disagi sulla propria rete" (major disruptions to the network) can be listed on one site yet not be mentioned on the other...
