How To Book An A380 Flight (SQ)

Mon Apr 30, 2007 2:27 pm

Hi folks,

Well, I may have a once in a lifetime opportunity here...my brother in law is moving to Penang, Malaysia for a year. I'm thinking "golden opportunity to fly the A380" when we go to visit him next March (2008). I tried to book a flight on the SQ website (from LAX), but the A380 didn't show on any flight schedules (only the 772, 773, and A345). Isn't the A380 supposed to be in service on the route by then? Are they only flying certain days or something?

Also, I tried downloading the PDF timetable, however it doesn't show equipment types  Sad Any rough pointers as to what the flight #'s with the A380 will be?

Thanks!

Uhh... yeahhh about that

The A380 is running about 18-24 months behind schedule and SQ should receive their first A380 toward the end of the year.

And it's not going to fly LAX-SIN out of the gate, either...

I'd say the 'golden opportunity' here is flying the A345. There aren't many of them and they'r supposed to be extremally comfortable at SQ. I dare to say, as much as flying on the A380 might be a novelty during her first years of operation, when a good lot of them are delivered there will be plenty of opportunities to fly on one.

BTW. Chances that you're going to be able to catch an A380 on LAX-SIN in march next year are very small.

By March 2008 you may see the A380 on SYD-SIN-LHR, if you are lucky, it MAY still be SIN-SYD only. SIN-LAX I'd be very suprised.

SQ have suggested that the 1st 380 will be delivered to them in early OCT with the first flights in the begining of Nov.

The first A380 flights will likely be the daily SIN-SYD-SIN from November until Jan 2008.

Which of the 3 SIN-SYD flights is still unclear but its likely to be SQ221/232 due to the fact that there is no Star Alliance availability.

If you are looking to fly the SQ A380 in March 2008 maybe I would suggest a RTW flying via the Pacific on the A345 then the A380; to LHR then onto UA to LAX.

Your only catch is working out which of the daily SIN-LHR will have the A380.
Why fly non stop when you can connect

Why's that? Is demand flat on the route, with enough capacity already? You'd think they could save some money by combining two smaller widebody flights down into a single A380 flight...or is SYD-SIN bursting at the seams?

At over 8700 mi (over 14000 km) that route is pushing the limits of the A380. Throw in a headwind over the pacific and it's very likely you will have a fuel stop.

I have my FF miles in the bank enough for a LHR-SIN-SYD round trip in J class on SQ and I too am waiting for the A380 to show in my CRS system. I think it will show in late summer to mid September but even then its not guranteed. In the first few months you may book onto a A380 and get to the gate only to find a last minute equiptment change. Im proberbly going to try for Feb/March myself for an A380 all the way to SYD. I would suggest going USA-London-SIN-
Penang. Even though you will only get the A380 on the LHR to SIN it will be worth it im sure.

You have to take the comment in context! We were talking about the OPs trip to Malaysia in March 2008. I would be very suprised if SQ had the A380 on SIN-LAX by then as they will only have 3 or 4 aircraft by then. SQs announced first A380 route will be a daily SIN-SYD-SIN, and the second a daily SIN-LHR-SIN, which gives you a daily SIN-SYD-SIN-LHR-SIN-SYD. That takes 3 airframes, they simply will not have the capacity, by March 08, to mount SIN-LAX.

Not really. SIN-LAX is 7621 nm (Great Circle), the A380 quoted range with 555 pax is 8000 nm. SQ is only putting 480 or so seats in its A380, it should do LAX-SIN fine, on most days. You will undoubtly get unscheduled fuel stops from time to time, as you do on LAX-SYD/MEL(6883 nm on B744).

The flights quoted above are nearly always sold out. SYD-SIN capacity is always a near 100% full route, as is the connecting SIN-LHR flights.
So far in 2008 45 flights and Gold already. JFK, IAD, LGA, SIN, HKG, NRT, AKL, PPT, LAX still to book ! Home Airport LCY

How high will be my chances if I fly in July 2008 the FRA-SIN-SYD route on SQ that I will be on an A380 on the SIN-SYD leg? Will every SQ flight o SYD be an A380 when they have enough planes?

No way will it do LAX-SIN nonstop. Not sure where you get this idea. Putting "only" 480 seats in it using really heavy product doesn't help, and at "555" seats it can't carry cargo.

The A380 will be flying LAX-???-SIN like the 747s do now. The A345 will continue to be the non-stop jet.

Most SIN-LAX flights with the 747 make a fuel stop at NRT so maybe they could do the same with the A380's and that route .
