Delta's Coming Out Party!

We all now DL emerges from bankruptcy protection tomorrow! Congrats to Dl and all there employee's world wide!

Few questions:

1.) What routes will they start or re-open? I know heard SLC as a Intl. gateway to Europe?

2.) Will DL place a new order with Boeing before years end?

Anyways glad to see DL emerge from bankruptcy protection.

maybe and yes

SLC wants a LGW and a CDG flight and DL is trying to get the A/C to fly the routes (when OpenSkys starts then you might see SLC-LHR)

DL will probably order a Good 30-40 T7s (a mix or 772ERs 77L and 77W)
also a 20-30 787, 737 order and a 25-30 E-190/195

and i would like to say GREAT JOB DELTA AIR LINES happy your back!!!!!!!!!

DL seems to have gone through a period of unprecedented expansion during their period of bankruptcy. While AC went through its spell, virtually everything was put on hold.

Congrats!!

A 787 order is definately likely. I woud expect it to be ordered at least in the fall. We could also see some more 777-200LRs or maybe even some 777-300ERs ordered. A new 100-seater may also be possible, with either the Embraer 190 or 195 being the most likely candidates. Delta has stated that any new 100-seat aircraft would be operated as mainline, not as Delta Connection. I don't see Delta ordering the 737-600 as its operating costs are barely any lower than the 737-700, and the CRJ-1000 is a niche aircraft.

I agree...

I see the 787 order forthcoming.. more 777... look for hte E90/E95..

as for routes.. ATL will remain king.. SLC will grow.. CVG will probably exchange more RJ for mainline, but nothing drastic... DL will probably grow more internationally.. probably ATL, SLC, JFK, maybe BOS and LAX..

I wonder what kinda surprises we will see though.. I could see a couple more international gateways opening up besides the hubs/focus cities.. or perhaps I just have a funny feeling for nothing..

I would tend to disagree, I don't see Delta ordering more 777-200ERs when the 777-200LR is available. Delta had some 777-200ERs on order, and they were all converted to 777-200LRs. I would expect that all of Delta's future 777 orders will be either the 777-200LR or the 777-300ER. Also, if Boeing decides on a 787-10, then the 787-10 could also be a possibility.

I see no reason why DL wouldn't order Boeing.

They are going to start flying to DXB in May.

I could see some new international destinations from SLC and some reopening at CVG in the near future.

Can't wait to see the new DL livery on 787.  yes

I think this is much more likely than a lot of people think, too! I know from talking to some people at DL that they really want some 100-ish seat aircraft to re-open some of their former mainline routes in the mountain west out of SLC. A few years ago, they dumped mainline from a lot of these routes and went all DL Connection with high frequencies. However, their market share dipped much more drastically than they had expected when loads dropped off. They have since made the determination that they would like to return some of those cities to mainline. Anyway, best of luck to DL in the world outside bankruptcy! You'll always be my airline!

The 787 order is pretty much confirmed in the press releases today. They said they need a livery without brushed aluminum.

What's the story about Delta taking AI's 777-200LRs? Much as I like to see DL grow, AI needs these aircraft (and perhaps a little decisiveness!)

When are the first 737-700s due to arrive?

It wouldn't surprise me to see a number of 777-200LRs being ordered; I know DL has quite a number of long haul routes projected ex-ATL, however, I expect to see a very significant 787 order, with the -9/10 ultimately to replace the 777-200ER and of course, the -8s to replace the 767-3/400ERs. I don't see any scope for -3s.

Looking forward to seeing the big order!

From CNN:

http://money.cnn.com/2007/04/30/news...y/index.htm?postversion=2007043013

"Among the moves it made was turning over its underfunded pilots' pension plans to a federal pension agency, while winning concessions on wages and work rules from its pilots."

"... Federal Bankruptcy Court Judge Adlai Hardin gave final approval to its reorganization plan last week, after he rejected four final objections filed by bondholders and shareholders who complained that they weren't being treated fairly."

Also from CNN: http://money.cnn.com/2007/04/25/news...t/index.htm?postversion=2007042519

"The company was pushed into bankruptcy after racking up nearly $19 billion in debt and accumulating $7.5 billion in losses between 2001 and 2005 amid high costs and low-fare competition.

From Reuters: http://www.reuters.com/article/coMkt...46085620070425?rpc=11&pageNumber=2

"As part of its emergence from bankruptcy, Delta plans to issue new shares to its creditors. It plans to list those shares on the New York Stock Exchange on May 3 under the symbol 'DAL'. Old Delta shares will consequently be canceled and therefore worthless.

Delta expects to have a market value of about $10 billion, which would make it the second-largest U.S. airline by market value after Southwest."

So: $19 Billion in Debt, $7.5 Billion in losses for a total of $26.5 Billion in the red, coming out of BK with a value of $10 Billion....seems like about $16.5 Billion just dissapeared.....Nice.....sounds like Delta screwed the pilots, lots of creditors, and the American taxpayers....I fail to see the cause for celebration.

I am sitting here 7000 miles away in Iraq swelling with pride. This is truly a great day for the Delta Family. They have stuck it out yet again and gave it their all. I can not say how proud I am today to be part of that family. I am going on R&R next week and will take a Hop just to congratulate them.

The new Delta livery signifies a new start. It is attractive and nothing fancy. While I do wish they kept the red and blue widget It seems like Delta was going after the Onwards and Upwards theme by the way the widget is tilted. At least we have a widget on the tail. Albeit not a complete one but it is a start.

I do wonder however what some of the test designs were. Wonder if someone can link to them or if they can post them.

Again Congrats to all the delta family. You have done a superb job. Keep up the great work. I can't wait to get home and Get on a Delta bird again.

The New Delta Livery - Does It Give Away A Secret?

http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1204514/L/

As I was reviewing the above photo of the new Delta livery and lamenting the plain-Jane front end that looks unfinished, I suddenly realized something. If you look at the aircraft from the left side, the Delta symbol points...........NORTHWEST!!!
Could this livery be an interim one that will be completed when DL merges with NW after the latter exits bankruptcy protection?

The tail logo would be a great way to celebrate both predecessor airlines.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. DL has quite a lot of non -ER 763's flying around the continental US, and the 783 would be perfect for those routes as it is optimized for short to medium hauls. ATL-MCO is a good example, but also ATL-LAX, ATL-SLC, ATL-SFO, and so forth. Maybe CondordeBoy could help us out a little bit here, he seems to know the workings of DL pretty well...

As a few of us Utah natives and Boeing and Airbus insiders via the vast supplier network have been saying for some time, SLC will be the hub of the west for international travel thanks to the 787. If the following occur:

1: SLC International management gets a clue and begins the long awaited expansion. If they build it international travel will come!
2: Delta buys the 787
3: Delta shows the way by funneling traffic from the west to international destinations using the 787 which can fly out of SLC 365 days a year loaded to most Delta international destinations.
a. Delta could milk SW and its own network for international traffic from the west.

This would begin the fragmentation effect. Airports like SLC and DEN will injoy the 787 internationally. Larger aircraft will suffer year round issues.

Watch for Delta's new paint job on the 787 and going international from SLC and ATL

I don't see Delta ordering the 787-3. More likely, Delta will probably convert some 767-300ERs to domestic configuration while the 767-300ERs are replaced by 787s on international routes. After all of the 767-300ERs are retired, maybe Delta could widen some of the gates at ATL in Concourse T and Concourse A.

Sorry Sir BlacKNight, that is wishful thinking. SLC will enjoy at best limited flights to Europe. Two destinations is really optimistic at this point. With the huge buildup of JFK and ATL Europe flights there really isn't room for a large Europe operation out of SLC. LAX will be the Asian hub and is going to grow greatly in that role. No room there either for SLC. I work in SLC and as much as I would like to see a lot of DL Intl. here it just isn't going to happen irrespective of the conditions you cited. Now I can think of a use for the 783 in SLC that hasn't been mentioned. SLC-HNL, SLC-OGG, SLC-KOA. Lowest CASM aircraft on high density low RASM routes. HMmmm. Maybe just maybe.

There would be no need. The 783 footprint is smaller than a 764 so there is no need for gate modifications as the 764 already flies out of T and A concourses.

Yippee, so another airline rises Lazarus-like from the dead on the backs of creditors, shareholder and employees. Problem is we're at the top of the business cycle, if not slightly past it. The new DL better be set to weather a recession.

Am I the only one who sees that Delta's new tail livery has a strong resemblances to CP Air's multimark livery?

I have no idea why this idea still persists. Delta was the one that put the kibosh on the expansion. No need to pay billions for an unneeded terminal. The current one isn't great, but it works, it has capacity and its CHEAP!

Exactly! The comcept for the whole new terminal and concources that surfaced a few years back was very nice and i totally woul love to see it, however, a huge financial undertaking like that would drastically reduce the level of profitability at the SLC hub. there are alot of things that can be done to modify the existing facilities as well. SLC is not a bad place to connect now, theres a good amount of open space and its not a very long walk for even the furthest of gates.

Summary = the less costly the improvements, the lower cost of facilities, meaning more profit for Delta, meaning more flights for SLC.

SLC should be a clean, convenient terminal with good amounts of open space and good concession offerings, if you have that you are set.
Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!

Watch for Delta's new paint job on the 787 and going international from SLC and ATL

That would be great! Unfortunately reading some other replies here, it sounds like other than eventually CDG, or London, it wont happen.

Dl757md, can you tell us when is DL supposed to make an announcement regarding new aircraft types?

If any US carrier orders the -3 it would be Delta.

I could also actually see AA and UA ordering the aircraft. The 783 makes a perfect A300 replacement for AA on those JFK/MIA-Caribbean flights. UA also operates a fair amount of domestic 767's and 777's, and the 783 would be extremely efficient on these routes.

Regarding AA's eventual need for an A300 replacement, let's also remember that the 787 is wider than Airbus widebodies and the 767, and thus will have plenty of cargo space, and cargo is AA's cash cow on the LA and Caribbean routes.

I personally wish they would just go back to the old Widget Livery that they used when they were making money back in the day

Why? Its old and outdated. The new livery is supposed to show that this is a new Delta, not the same one from ten years ago. As much as I liked the old widget scheme, it was time to move on and update it.

I wish I could, however, I'm not privy to that detail. All I know is that will be huge and I THINK from what I've heard that it will happen by this Fall. Don't quote me on that though.

I have absolutely no inside info but I'm placing my bet on an announcement at the Paris Air Show about 43 days from now.

on the subject of Delta aircraft orders, I have heard that Delta is only going to be getting 10 757s from AA/TWA, not 13 as originally agreed to. Has anyone heard anything about the 757s Delta is supposed to get?

I'm glad DL survived and is out of bankruptcy. I wonder how they plan to offload Comair? They really do need to sell that operation.

Seriously people, enough with the airline merger conspiracy theories. For just one day, let the Delta folk enjoy something they've worked hard for.

I think the guy was joking that time.

Quoting BlackKnight (Reply 29):
As a few of us Utah natives and Boeing and Airbus insiders via the vast supplier network have been saying for some time, SLC will be the hub of the west for international travel thanks to the 787.

DEN would win out over SLC, it's bigger, has more O&D, and has much better connectivity as well as operating efficiency and capability.
