US And SQ Apply With DOT For Codeshare Authority

Tue May 01, 2007 5:45 am

As previously noted in this thread, US Airways and Singapore Airlines have reached a reciprocal codeshare agreement.

Now, they've finally gotten around to formally applying with the DOT for approval of the codeshare agreement.

The initial US-operated routes to carry the SQ* code will be:
LAX-LAS/PHX
SFO-LAX/PHX

The initial SQ-operated routes to carry the US* code will be:
SIN-LAX
SIN-HKG-SFO
SIN-AMS/MAN/ZRH
SIN-BWN/CGK/DPS

In a related filing, US Airways has applied for the seven available fifth-freedom frequencies on HKG-SIN, so that it may offer codeshare flights to local traffic on that route.

In the initial codeshare announcement, there were additional codeshare routes announced, but these will not be implemented immediately. The SQ* code was to have been placed on US Airways Express flights between JFK-CLT, but those flights are operated by Mesa Airlines, and SQ and YV do not yet have an approved codeshare agreement covering USX flights. The US* code was to have been placed on SQ flights between SIN-PER/SGN, but US does not yet have authority to fly to Australia or Vietnam.

US Airways will now codeshare with Star Alliance partners United, Lufthansa, Spanair, bmi, TAP Portugal, and Singapore Airlines, with a codeshare agreement with Air China to be finalized in the near future. US Airways also codeshares with Lufthansa's partners Air One, Air Dolomiti, and Eurowings, and with GoCaribbean Network members Bahamasair and WINAIR.
I'm the expert on here on two things, neither of which I care about much anymore.

Brilliant! One can now in theory, circle the world on a US Airways flight!

bmi

What is US's deal with bmi? I dont think involves bmi codesharing on any US flights

And will the deal be expanded with open skies (BD codesharing on US's LON/MAN flights)?

It's obvious how careful US was in not (unfortunately) developing an SQ code share from the West Coast to PHL - I assume because of the UA Asia relationship. This will be even more interesting, as well as the upcoming Air China relationship, If US does indeed start an Asia route from PHL by early next year. I can't imagine getting off of the SQ flight at JFK and transferring to a Mesa flight to CLT - what an awakening that would be.
We are but a moment in this vast Universe and when gone we will never have existed.

Isn't this kind of stuff already covered because the airlines are in the same alliance? Doesn't being in an alliance incorporate code-share agreements?

Air Canada seems to be a glaring hole on that list. Any word on when an AC/US codeshare agreement may be forthcoming?
