PIA To Retire F27 Fleet, Sell 747-200s

Tue Aug 01, 2000 9:50 pm

I read in the news that Pakistan International has decided to retire its fleet of some 15 F27s, the type being considered for replacement are the ATR42/72 and Dash8, which do you think they'll chose.PIA is also selling off 4 of its 8 B747-200s and scrapping two for spares ( the six are grounded at present), wonder which type will replace them, most probably the 777 as they were in talks with Cathay Pacific to lease some as they have 6 of CXs 747-300s, the first Rolls Royce powered aircraft in PIAs fleet.

Some time ago PIA was in talks to buy 744s. The 743s are an interim solution.

PIA is also planning on acquiring around five freighters. It has been a while since PIA decided to modernize their flight, but financial conditions have slowed down the process. I would like to see PIA replace the Fokkers with the ATR 72. I heard that PIA may get the 777 or 330 to replace the 742, instead of the 744 or 340.

PIA has missed out on two great opportunities to buy the 747-400, the first was from Boeing which were selling 3 or more factory fresh Philippine airlines aircraft with a hefty discount, the second was some used 747-400s of Malaysia airlines, the first one was lost because the previous govt and the PIA management conspired to make the airline a loss maker so as to privatise it ,so the new equipment was not to be inducted, reason given was a lame one claiming that Boeing werent going to modify the aircraft to PIAs specefictions in time, in time for what? i ask, you dont look a gift horse in the mouth, PIA was saving millions of dollars on each aircraft in that deal, the second failed i dont know for what reason, the aircraft were later aquired by South African and Qantas respectively

Is this decision by PIA to retire the Friendship's from their fleet, a financial decision, a modernisation decision or is it the fact that, along with UB, they have run the Friendship's safety record into the ground? Take a look at this for a *safety record* with the Friendship.

Scotty, the retirement is to facilitate modernisation of the fleet and not for safety reasons.
