Another NWA Dc9 Thread! Sort Of.

Thu May 03, 2007 3:13 am

NWA is the only US major ive never flown on. My ex-fiance however is currently making an east coast trip on them. She knows nothing about aircraft or airlines. All she really knows is that she cant have a cigarette until after arriving in PHL. Anyway, this is only her second trip on an aircraft. The first just happend to be 2 weeks ago when she flew on a mesa CRJ-200. She hated flying on the CRJ.

This morning I receved a text from her impressed with how much larger this plane was and how much more comfortable it was(She was comparing this aircraft to a Mesa CRJ-200 at this point). I looked up her flight arrangements and saw that she was on a dc9 then transferring to am A320 in MSP. Later she called me out of boredom(and to complain about not being able to have a smoke) at MSP and I told her that her next flight should be more comfortable and there might even be some kind of IFE (remember, I have never flown on NWA). I just got a call from her after she boarded the A320, she just wanted to let me know that I was wrong about the comfort level and that the other aircraft was no where near as cramped!

So, does anyone on this board share her sentiments? Preferring the Northwest DC-9 to a company A320? Smile

I've flown every narrowbody in the NW fleet numerous times, and I'll tell you that the interiors are really not too much different, and if for nothing else besides novelty, I'd take a -9 any day. And I suppose that the 5-abreast seating does make it seem less cramped. (For those of us who are elite, the upgrade chances are better too... it's the only way remaining to be an upgrade whore now that the Avros have been retired).

If it ain't Boeing, I'm not going!  Smile

Having flown on both airplane types before I knowing better......kiddin......I would much prefer the DC-9 if seated on the A/B side of the airplane rather than the 3X3 seating on the bus. Which seat did she have on the Diesel niner?

I think the better question is....why is she your ex-fiance (besides the cigs), she seems to trust you to fill her moments of boredom with hearing your voice???  duck

She probably wasn't impressed with the size, comfort, or the need not to have a smoke afterwards...  devil

sorry I couldn't resist.

Having flown on both aircraft many times, the DC-9 is a little more spacious and in my opinion much more comfortable. I now take the DC-9 whenever I can will take it over the A320 in less than a heartbeat.

I'm not sure what side of the aircraft she was seated. As for the better question, after living with her, her kids, assuming some of her debts, and the fact she suffers from what I would call "extreme bi-polar", I couldn't take her sh*t anymore. Lets just say that if a NWA a320 makes an diversion in the next hour due to an unruly passenger I wouldn't be surprised!!! We do get along much better living 1000miles apart!

Back on topic. I find her opinions interesting because she never flew on a plane until 2 weeks ago. I myself would have thought the A320 would have been more comfortable to an in experienced traveler.

If you can manage a seat on the AB side of a DC-9, that's a pretty nice setup. I think that has to do with with the E170/190 series is so popular. Full size seats 2-abreast is pretty comfortable.

The only thing better is the A seat in an E140.

For coach...that is...

NW has no domestic IFE. The monitors and systems are there, but they don't use them. Pretty sure this is the case for flights within the lower 48 states.

Perhaps someone can enlighten us if NW shows movies on flights to AK and HI?

Yes, and to correct you slightly, the 32x series do not have IFE installed. IIRC, they use the audio system but not the video on the 757s for safety demonstrations.

You know what's funny? When my mom took her second trip on a plane ever, she missed her connection to CLT and ended up flying to GSO on probably a Pinnacle CRJ (she said it was the same type of plane she was on for the CWA-DTW leg). She called it a "nice little plane."

Of course she also said there were only four passengers on the flight, and her basis for comparison was the Saab 340 she'd flown to CWA on...

IFE is enabled on the 757's for the HI flights. Not sure about AK (I don't think so).

The 5600 series aircraft they use the audio... but the 5500 series they dont.

Boy, someone was ragging on me yesterday for reading the Trib instead of the Sun Times, and now I wander on here to find this. Guess it's a sign I should be working harder on this paper...

I gotta think that at least some of her perceived feelings toward the 320 was the total length of time without a cig to quench her habit. The fidgets and irritation would be normal withdrawal symptoms no matter the aircraft.
