Is that a US test reg on the body or just a odd assortment of numbers that happens to have an N by it?

it appears to be just an odd assortment of numbers. But the aircraft once completed would have to eventually complete trials possibly in the U.S. to get certified here.

Isn't Boeing a big partner in this project? Maybe that would be an other reasen for the "n" reg.

I read an articel somwhere , that Boeing has taken the marketing role in the project, an FAA certificat would be a big boost for this plane

just my thoughts

Actually, Boeing provides product management and engineering consulting. Support and maintenance are provided by Finmeccanica, through either Alenia or ATR (if EADS agrees.)

Just a thought - those numbers could mean something like
N (for number)
95 (for the longer 95 seat fuselage)
002 (for airframe number 2)

What do you think

It's an N. I believe in the Cyrillic alphabet, the only letter that looks like an N is an inverted N, which is pronounced I, while H is pronounced like an N (Russian speakers, please feel free to correct me). Cyrillic letters in registrations were only used for the Soviet Register (they used CCCP-xxxxx (with the x being numbers) registrations, with CCCP translating to SSSR in the letters we use). If this was a registration, it would have been RA-95002 (if registered in Russia).

BTW: who's doing the final assembly of the Superjet? Is it done by Sukhoi in house or is it outsourced to a different company, with Sukhoi just being a design bureau like Tupolev, Ilyushin and Antonov? It's hard to keep up with that for me.

If you go onto the link again, the artist impression drawing of the superjet at the top also has a relatively short wing, so I would say yes, that is the wing size.

Agreed, it looks good, although a little "fatter" than I expected it to, more like a F70/F100 than an E-jet.

Bombardier is so far behind with the C-series (entry into service projected in 2013 according to Bombardier's website) that if Sukhoi can get certified and get some sales outside Russia and the CIS countries, it could lead to the C-series being cancelled. And for the handful of true believers left, put the final nail in the "Rekkof" coffin once and for all.  stirthepot

Most probably SSJ's registered in Russia will carry registrations like RA-95XXX ("X" are all figures). In Russia there's a tradition or even regulation to assign registration number in accordance with the aircraft type. One may notice that all RA- registrations for Tu-154's are RA-85XXX, the same for Il-86's (RA-86XXX) and so on.

I think the RJ looks cool! the nose looks kinda like a 787.... I love the Su-27-32-34 aircraft hopefully some of that technology trickles down to the RJ

The pictures of the fuselage are nothing new, but that's the first I have seen the wings and fuselage mated. Very good news to see the program moving forward.

Good looking aircraft. The cockpit windows remind me of a B757.

And that wing looks awful small. Can any engineers out there explain?

The Sukhoi looks like a very nice plane indeed. The Russians know how to build good airplanes, and this one looks like it could be a winner. I'm hoping it succeeds, it's going against some very tough, well entrenched competition in Bombardier and Embraer. But if Boeing is going to provide support, that should help expand it's appeal.

Have any airlines in the Americas or Europe placed any orders for them?

Good luck to Sukhoi!

Cheers, Ralph

I'm not an engineer - not a real one, just have a degree in engineering I've never used - but I'd say, It's hard to tell how big the wing really is. Once it has ailerons and flaps hanging off the back, it might look more "average". To my eye, though, the span doesn't look unusually short.

To be sure, there are many companies involved. Many of the subcontractors on the Superjet are owned by Sukhoi's parent company, United Aircraft.

Speaking of Soviet registrations, I saw a few pictures once of aircraft having CCCP-Lxxxx registrations (with the L written in Cyrillic), which seemed to have been assigned to experimental aircraft that were in the certification process (or at least that's my impression). But later, still experimental at the time, aircraft didn't have such registrations anymore (e.g. the TU-144).

Quoting EYKD (Reply 20):

Don't forget the Russian registrered 757s from Vim Airlines that have an RA-73xxx registration sequence.

Hopefully Sukhoi makes a "Stretched" version of their RJ in the future. IMO probably a good competitor to the E170/190 and the A320 Family.

I think if they can get full EASA/FAA certification, the Sukhoi SuperJet 100 will be sold in huge numbers to African operators, especially with the severe crackdown on flying second-hand Soviet-era airplanes from most of Africa in the past 5-7 years.

Indeed, there's pretty big demand for the stretched SSJ version. As I heard Sukhoi is already considering 110-seater. This will make it direct competitor to A318.

You can hear rumours around that Sukhoi is not allowed to produce "more-than-100-seaters" under the agreement with Boeing. But Sukhoi authorities deny that. Well, we'll see.
