ACY Wants To Be EWR/PHL Reliever

Looks like ACY wants the Government to help it become the Reliever Airport for ("congested") EWR and PHL.

Wonderful idea, but only if Christie's (spelling) is allowed to expand to the airport terminal!  Smile

I don't see it relieving EWR at all. It's about a two hour drive for me from New Providence to Atlantic City, and EWR isn't that much closer (you can either take the Turnpike to Woodbridge or backtrack on I-78 for about 5 miles to the Parkway). And then, if it's a summer day, forget about it when you hit the Jersey Shore.

PHL is a bit more reasonable, since from the Jersey side of the river, it's only about 40-50 minutes down the ACE, while it can easily take 30 minutes to get to PHL with having to cross the river - I'd easily drive the extra 10-15 minutes to ACY instead of dealing with PHL - you'll save the time there in dealing with parking, security (which can get really bad, especially out of the Southwest terminals) and of course the airfield congestion (none of these three issues are bad at ACY). The one thing against it is that PHL is a lot less of a market, and would only be convinient for those on the Jersey side; if you're on the Pennsylvania side, MDT and ABE are a lot more convinient regional airports to use.

I don't think the justification is distance (drive-ability) between ACY and EWR or PHL, but rather the claim that the current ACY catchment (which may be an area approx. 50 miles in any direction from ACY) is being absorbed by EWR and PHL and that if ACY had more traffic/airlines, that segment would instead use ACY.

Union, Bergen, Essex, Passaic county residents are not going to consider ACY, those folks especially Bergen county residents would consider Stewart as an alternative. That however is only a part of EWR's catchment area, for folks in Middlesex, Mercer, Ocean, and where I am in Monmouth County ACY is an alternative.

Folks in Somerset, Warren and Sussex counties Allentown is an alternative.

ACY has huge potential, either Jetblue or Airtran (or both) will be there within the next two years. Besides "landing" a B6 or FL they need some more hub service (CO CLE, AA ORD, MIA, US PIT, CLT, UA IAD).

Is there another Essex county I don't know about? The one I know is where Newark Airport is located, why someone would want to drive 2 hours to an airport, when there is one within 15-30 minutes depending on where in the county you are, baffles me.

I think you could only get Southern Middlesex County (Old Bridge, Monroe, South Brunswick) to consider ACY, The northern part, especially north of the Raritan River is just too close to EWR, for them to consider it.

ACY could be trying to get service before TTN gets more service, although I think the NIMBYs will help stall expansion at TTN.
