Boeing 737 Stuck On A Mumbai Street

Thu May 03, 2007 4:08 pm

Fuselage of an ex Air Sahara Boeing 737 being transported on a trailor to DEL is now stuck on a narrow lane in a Mumbai suburb. This is because the driver of the trailor was given a wrong direction to enter the BOM-PNQ expressway. It came to a dead end and cannot be turned around on this narrow lane.

Some pictures.

I am surprised they hired a driver who was not even aware of the streets in Mumbai. The plane is not only lost but orphaned. Local residents said that the three men with the trailer fled the scene when angry shopkeepers heckled them.

Silly That's made my day. I got a bit freaked out by the first picture, the guy looks like he's floating on air. Also, for some reason I now feel like a mango.

Question: they got it in, so it *is* possible to get it out -- sure they can't reverse out -- but what about simply attaching a truck to the trailer with the help of plenty of heavy-guage chain, and pulling it out the same way they got it in? Will require a bit of work, but it could feasibly be done. (Would also require the assistance of the police to close the road off ...)

I worked in Mumbai for 8 months, the streets and traffic can be a real mess.

Toss it off the side and open more shops, the best solution!

If they keep oit there much longer, it will be dismantled quicker than they can say "Boeing".

Assuming the tractor is at the front end, the solution of this "problem" is relatively easy. Get a second flat trailer, attach it with a tow bar to the trailer with the 737, move the tractor up fron and pull the bloody thing out. What's the problem? Eat a mango.

Looks almost like they transport this bird with wings attached. India live.

BTW - that guy is either doing the Indian rope trick without a rope or he is part of the "Flying Pakora Brothers".

If they got it in there, they can get it out. All it takes is a talented super trucker. I offer my services for the following: Paid return airfare in F or C - and associated miles, + $1000 USD. Anyone think they will take me up on that offer?

I first thought it was a serious post....then started thinking it's a photoshopped job meant as a joke.....now I'm not sure....

Is this for real???? How come it's not on any news site or channel? Why the heck were they transporting a 737 on a truck to DEL? And finally, where exactly is this thing stuck (you can tell me the detailed location as I'm an ex-Mumbaikar) smile  ?

This is classic. You can't be surprised as the streets of Mumbai are a real circus. I've been to India 4 times now and I am absolutely amazed as what I see! It is a must for anyone who enjoys travel and experiencing different cultures.

Yes it is real, it has appeared on one of the news channel, if my road sense serves me correct that is somewhere in Chembur Surburb.

you beat me to it..by yeah.. it must be what they were using to secure the plane during the move...or probably was attached at some point later..

It definitely reflects on the the kind of improvisation and ingenuity people in developing countries can come up with.!! (The standing on the wire and not caring the slightest bit about safety to him or others ....or damaging something...I love it!!!!!  Smile )

side note: Some times I think people in developed countries lack this kind/level of improvisation!!!

Yep - Not for a moment did I think this was a joke - I am just surprised that a truck drive relied on "directions" - in a city like Bombay you wont find street signs - you stop and you ask, not that I dont realize a giant trouch carrying a 737 is the best thing to stop on a road in Mumbai - OR you pay a local to rise with you to the end of the city for a couple of bucks + cost of commute back ...

Actually, if it was not mentioned in the linked report in Reply 36 that it was destined for a flight training academy, I wouldn't be at all surprised should it turn out that some enterprising soul chanced upon that hull wasting away in a remote area of BOM airport, hit on a similar idea and seized the opportunity to "convince" the one in charge that it could be put to much better use than being scrapped. "Taxiing" on its way to its "final holding position" might explain why there were no claimants. In which case, the restaraunteur and the caterer in the report could offer to shoulder the costs of clearing the street in exchange for the plane which they could then turn into a unique extension of their businesses  stirthepot  where they could prepare lots of curry, and sweet, ripe mangoes for dessert.  Wink
