NW Set For 757 Trans Atlantic Starting Monday

Fri May 04, 2007 1:23 am

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Beginning Monday May 7, Northwest Airlines will launch 757 trans atlantic service between Detroit and Frankfurt Germany, Flight 96 will depart Detroit at 11:05pm local and arrive Frankfurt at 1:25pm the next day. This is an addition to Northwest's current A330-300 service.

Heres the schedule.. it is somewhat of an odd one (757 flight only) A330 flight is daily DTW-FRA 5:30 pm-7:50am and FRA-DTW 10:40am-1:50pm

May 7-
DTW-FRA 11:05pm-1:25pm
May 8
DTW-FRA 11:05pm-1:25pm FRA-DTW 3:20pm-6:40pm
May 9
DTW-FRA none FRA-DTW 3:20pm-6:40pm
May 10
DTW-FRA 3:15pm-5:35am FRA-DTW None
May 11
DTW-FRA 11:05pm-1:25pm FRA-DTW 7:15am-10:35am
May 12
DTW-FRA 11:05pm-1:25pm FRA-DTW 3:20pm-6:40pm
May 13
DTW-FRA None FRA-DTW 3:20pm-6:40pm
May 14
DTW-FRA 11:05pm-1:25pm FRA-DTW none

Not really sure what is up with the one weekly flight that has horrible times, eventually this flight will go daily.

I wonder which birds they have fitted out with the new interiors already, still see some of the the new winglet 57's still doing regular domestic runs so they obviously have not had the interiors redone yet.

NW Set For 757 Trans Atlantic Starting Monday

Fri May 04, 2007 3:28 am

The schedule is:

DTW-FRA:
NW 96 Depart: 3:15pm Arrive: 5:35am+1 757 Thursday
NW 52 Depart: 5:30pm Arrive: 7:50am+1 A330 Daily
NW 96 Depart: 11:05pm Arrive: 1:25pm+1 757 Monday, Tuesday, Friday Saturday

No 757 (second frequency) flight on Wednesday & Sunday

FRA-DTW:
NW 95 Depart: 7:05am Arrive: 10:35am 757 Friday
NW 51 Depart: 19:55am Arrive: 1:50pm A330 Daily
NW 95 Depart: 3:20pm Arrive: 6:40pm 757 Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday Sunday

No 757 (second frequency) flight on Monday & Thursday

Actually those flight times make a lot of sense. The primary driver for the different timw on the Thursday DTW-FRA & Friday FRA-DTW is the desire to offer an early morning flight back. A lot of people on business want to get home in time for the weekend, and due to the flight times in the morning cannot get any meaningful business done in Europe and still get home at a decent time on Friday. So often you wrap up on Thursday and just get up and fly home on Friday. Makes more sense than a late afternoon departure on a Friday.

I used to do this when I was going back and forth to Europe for work for 3 months. I'd wrap up on Thursday, and take earliest flight back on Fridays, getting back into DTW around 1pm. Granted, due to the jet lag, I'd be out for the night by 8pm upon my return, so it was be able to enjoy Friday afternoon back at home, opposed to wasting more of the day traveling.

NW Set For 757 Trans Atlantic Starting Monday

Fri May 04, 2007 1:26 pm

There is (supposedly) currently one aircraft that has a cabin upgrade, and that is N545US. however it doesn't have winglets yet. i dont know how quickly they can install winglets....but they have 3 days to do it. according to my recent check of info, this aircraft is sitting in IND...where the cabin mods are done. I really hope NW doesn't start the route with a domestic configured 757....ick!

Edit....actually i see this aircraft made it to DTW today. still no winglets though.

I was looking at IND-DTW-FRA just checking prices and noticed they have the 757 loaded already for the flights I was checking on May 8th and 15th. WTF. The 757 both ways is nearly empty. How can they consider running that flight with maybe 2 or 3 dozen people booked? Probably explains why with 4 days notice I can get a ticket for under $600.
Indy = Indianapolis and not Independence Air

I see flight 96 went yesterday, looks like went a little more than half full. What struck me as odd is that they had some seats blocked for "crew rest". I would think that one crew would be able to do that flight and they would not need a reserve/rest crew onboard.

An 8hr flight requires crew rest time.

I have heard from a source the a/c will have business class seats. Westbound flights will carry very little freight and may possiblly have a refueling stop....
i can see for 80 miles

Not a rumour, the first class seats were removed and WBC seats added, plus some coach seats removed to provide more leg room. Capacitiy went from 184 to 160 with the new configuration.

I flew on a NWA 757 w/ winglets a couple weeks ago RSW-DTW. No WBC installed- still domestic config. Forgot to record the reg. #.
Direct KNOBS, maintain 2700' until established on the localizer, cleared ILS runway 26 left approach.

Thank you for pointing that out, Burnsie. Seems to be a misconception. Crews do get rest on flights. That and it is usually a contractual issue between the flight attendant work group and the company. At CO, we get breaks on flights scheduled 8 hours or more.

One crew can, but with rest. Pilots are mandated for crew rest on flights scheduled 8:01 or more. No reserve crew or double staffing necessary.

The 8 hour rule aside, don't you think it would be a good idea to have a relief pilot on a flight that departs at 11PM and lasts 8 hours?

NWA might have that in their contract like other carriers do, so even if it was 6 hours they'd get an extra pilot which they should.
