SEATTLE, May 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA - News) and Continental Airlines today announced that the airline will be the first U.S. carrier to use the Boeing Class 3 Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) on its 777s. Boeing has delivered the second of two 777-200ER airplanes equipped with the Class 3 Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) to Continental Airlines. The airline accepted delivery of their first EFB-equipped 777-200ER in March. Continental also selected the Boeing EFB to retrofit on its previously purchased 777s.

Continental is the first carrier in the united states to start using this system. The same Jeppessen products are available electronically in the cockpit. It will help the airline work towards a paperless cockpit.

forgive my ignorance, but what aircraft are capable of handling this package? I would think something like this would make more sense for an aircraft that would fly to a multitude of cities. 777s especially for
CO usually fly to only a few cities...
CDG LGW etc whereas commuter aircraft are often in any of hundreds of different cities on any given day. This just brings to mind Comair 5191, would this have made any difference?

Eventually all
CO aircraft with have EFBs, the company promised the union they would install them by the 787's EIS

The crews still carry about 60lbs worth of paper in their nav kits

Yes it would have, EFBs can be equipped with an airport moving map function

My airline wants to get them, they've tested out the different models, talked with the manufacturers, etc. The one problem is that the FAA is going to require us to have both electronic and paper for 1 year to ensure everything goes smoothly and the airline can't make it cost effective to have both systems for an entire year. So, for now, we'll keep throwing out backs out with our flight cases. *sigh*

While that might be true, I believe the crews on the 777s have to carry all the documentation for any possible diversion airport. I may be wrong, but a
CO 777 flying
EWR-
DEL has to have tons of way points and charts for every part of airspace that they fly through.

Has a nice hefty database in the FMC that is for sure, as do all the
CO aircraft.......database el grande'!
IIRC,
CO sometime back upgraded all their aircraft to a larger database than some other operators have but the exact size of it slips my mind.
And, bravo to
CO for going to the EFB......yet another example of the leading edge technology with their flight ops that
CO adopted long ago.
WORK HARD FLY RIGHT, keep keeping on!

All
QX aircraft will be equipped with EFBs, including the Q200s. Installation should begin later this year. This will include displays both on the flight deck and one in the cabin for the Flight Attendant.

So what happens when something goes wrong with the system in an emergency... I don't think this is a great idea to go all paperless.

If you rode jump seat on an aircraft you might be surprised what happens when a pilot has to rely on paper. Take away a pilot's FMS and for the most part they struggle to figure out the Jepp charts. (What do those symbols mean again?
) The only thing Jepp charts are routinely used for are as sun shades in the eye-brow windows. As they say, if you don't use it you lose it.
Statistically speaking, the technology is very reliable and the chance of losing both EFBs is very small. If you do, then you are having a very bad day and might want to consider that God is trying to send you a message.....

BTW
NZ has been using Electronic Flight Bag on its 772ER into and over the USA for over a year now.

Not sure where you get your information from, we use Jepp charts all the time and even know what the ''symbols' mean
Most of us do not have EFB'S.
We have dedicated sun shades.
Try educating yourself a little old chap, you'd be surprised how far it can take you..

I thought I had started a thread on this before. It was started in Civil Av, but it was moved into Non Av, then into Tech ops.

Wow, congrats to
CO
When I was in the Southwest Flight Ops - Publications department, they were looking heavily into it but it was still at least 5 years away (that was in '04). The EFB is quite convenient and handy from what I've read (provided you dont run out of batteries
)
