American Orders More 777's And 737's.

Wed Aug 02, 2000 2:24 am

American has just ordered an additional 6 B777-200IGW's and 3 B737-800's to be delivered in 2001/2002, I guess at the same time the 20 757's ordered recently will be delivered. The fleet of 777's and 737-800's will be 43 and 108 respectively. This probably means that American is planning to retire the last 727's sooner than what was planned, they may retire their last 727 already in late 2001. I though American would still operate the 727 until 2004 but a 767 captain told me a few months ago that the 727's would be gone end of 2001. The DC-10's will be gone end of this year.
I'd better fly on a 727, if possible, before it's too late.

The 2001 date is still very unlikely. This order announcement is a real surprise, I would have thought it would have been made at Farnborough, or in Oct, when a larger order is expected to be announced. I would think the earliest possible full retirement of the 727s is late 2002 or early 2003.

Eagle also ordered 6 more RJ's from Embraer. These aren't specified which type, but they state they would like to be the ERJ-145 upon approval of the Pilots' contract

American will operate the 727 until 2003. The newly ordered airplanes will serve to expand some routes. If I am not mistaken, the last 727 to retire will be N892AA.

Any chance AA will get any -600's, -700's or 717's?

Yes, Whippy. American has options on 737-600's and 700's, those would eventually replace the Super 80's in ten or twelve years from now I suppose. They do have a whole lot of NG737's on option but they didn't say they would order the 717. Maybe they will, but I think they would replace the Fokker 100's with 737-600's.
American's idea is to end up, in the long run, with a fleet consisting of the following four types:
NG737, 757, 767-300ER and 777.

PS: N892AA is a 727-223 (not a 227).
