Interview With Mesa Airlines

Another small step in my quest to be an airline pilot...

I have an interview with Mesa Airlines in a few weeks for a pilot position, and am looking to get all the help I can to prepare for it. Currently, I'm reading up on the company (routes, history, fleet size/types, hubs/domiciles, corporate officers, etc), studying the crap out of my ATP - written prep book, and generally stuffing as much flying knowledge as I can get into my head.

For those who are flying, or have flown with, Mesa, any hints? Also, since this is my first -121 interview, any general interview hints would be greatly appreciated.

I have never done an interview but this website has posts about pilot interviews from Mesa along with pretty much all the airlines in the US.

Congrats dude, good luck.

None of my pilot buds have interviewed with Mesa, but a lot of people poo-poo that airline unnecessarily. Upgrade times at various comparable carriers are in the area of 5-7 years, where at Mesa after five you can already have two years in the left seat.

Did you consider why upgrade time at Mesa is faster than at other airlines? Mesa isn't expanding significantly more than other airlines. They don't have a large pool of pilots hitting mandatory retirement age. To me, its indicative of high turnover, which means pilots (and others, but that's out of the scope of this discussion) aren't staying at Mesa. Why they're not staying is left as an exercise to the reader.

That said, I will add that almost all (but not all) of my exposure to Mesa's front-line staff has been positive, from gate agents to inflight personnel.

Mesa is where I started my FA career at!!! Right now I would guess you will get hired and then go to IAD or ORD, although they put some new hires in PHX from time to time. I've flown with all the guys that do the interviews, they are all pretty chill so I would just be yourself. Anymore, it seems like they hire anyone for up there. Just be prepared because mesa has a "special" culture. We pretty much are the coolest folks out there...all the other airlines always look at us like we are the runway they land on, and we just think its funny...its just a job Skywest, you can relax!!! Anyways, you'll have to get used to the occasional BS also, for instance whenever you get a mainline jump seater...they never talk to you...but mesa is fun because you can kick them of your flight and management thinks its funny. Its really laid back, everyone agrees that it sucks there, and people just try to have a good time. PHX sucks...all those pilots are from Florida Gulf or some other PRE 95 mesa endeavor it seems...no shortage of four digit seniority numbers in PHX. But some of the best crews I've worked with are PHX based. Reduced rest, and missing BIG parts of paychecks isn't as common as people say, but it definitely occurs more so than at other airlines. I'm finishing up my stuff right now, and all I will say is, after being an FA at that company (even though I had a lot of fun) I will not fly for them EVER again. Its abusive to say the least, and in five years, who knows if they will even be around. Get in, GET TURBINE PIC, and get out!!! Good luck!! Best of wishes for your next four years of hell!  Smile

Find me any regional airline with a large pool of pilots hitting retirement age...they're not United or American...Mesa's only been around since 1979...that's only 22 years

Pilots are not staying at Mesa for two reasons #1 is because it is a regional airline where pilots go to build turbine PIC time for two years and than try to get into a larger better paying airline, that is how alot of the regionals are. #2 the pay is bad so if a better job opertunity comes up pilots leave.
