Spirit To Start FLL-BOS

Tue May 08, 2007 5:10 am

With service to Providence permanently discontinued, Spirit will begin non-stop service between Ft. Lauderdale and Boston on 8 November 2007:

NK 107 BOS 0630-0945 FLL 319 Daily
NK 126 FLL 1950-2300 BOS 319 Daily

Currently, Spirit flies a daily FLL-MYR-BOS flight. Although Spirit will continue to operate FLL-MYR and MYR-BOS, it will no longer be a through flight and the FLL-MYR and MYR-BOS flights will be retimed.

Not including destinations which have yet been confirmed, Spirit Airlines will offer service between Ft. Lauderdale non-stop to thirty five cities effective 7 November 2007. The number will likely reach fifty by summer 2008.

Launching this fall - so far - will be Baranquilla, Bogota, Boston, Caracas, Chiclayo, and Port of Spain.

Aruba, San Francisco and San Salvador (El Salvador) are looking likely. Also being tossed around in the rumour mill are Belize City, Freeport, Georgetown (Guayana), Guayaquil, Maracaibo, Panama City, Ponce, Roatan, and Toluca.

Spirit Airlines is working with FLL officials to redesign Terminal 4 in order to better facilitate international connections, add better concessions, and expand gate space.

I take it this flight is designed for connecting traffic and not O&D?

I was going to ask the same thing. Not knowing much about NKs operations in FLL, do the times of the flights look conducive to Latin American connections?

Both. When Spirit first started out, they had a pretty rigid system of banks, but that is no longer the case. Some services that were originaly designed for connecting passengers have prooven popular with local customers. For example, Ft. Lauderdale-Orlando was started for the sole purpose of feeding into the LatAm/Caribbean ops, but this fall they will be flying the route 3x daily. Ft. Lauderdale-Atlanta was originally also meant to be mainly for connections, but they have doubled frequency, and garnered strong local traffic on the route.

The Boston flight does, however, connect to the majority of their Caribbean flights. It will connect to everything except Chiclayo, Lima, Port of Spain, and San Pedro Sula.

One thing that Spirit is doing this winter, in light of international expansion which is putting a tight hold on aircraft availability (despite the fact they are still recieving new Airbus) is that some third daily FLL frequencies will be combined with other cities. The third daily FLL-DTW will become FLL-MCO-DTW; the third daily FLL-ACY flight will become FLL-MYR-ACY. Spirit will be able to split those flights again later in 2008.

I had a feeling we were going to switch ops to BOS.... waiting for BOS-RSW to appear now, since PVD-RSW did very well.

I like that, MYR isn't real popular in the winter, so it makes sense to run a thru flight.

This should be good news and good timing for the busy winter travel season. I don't see why they will have any problem filling a daily 319, FLL is a top destination out of BOS that sees around 2,000+ daily pax during the busy season. Add in the connections to Caribbean cities, and the flight should perform well.

Let's hope it will be seasonal.... however, I would not be too surprised if PVD didn't come back at all. The reason I say this is because on our website, if you click on PBI it says service will resume in Nov., but doesn't say that for PVD. I hope it does return though.

This spring NK increased their PVD seats by over 100% and their pax loads didnt even flinch (stayed strong in the mid 80's). If NK chooses not to return to PVD at least seasonally, it will almost certainly be someone else's (FL/B6) gain in 2008 or 2009.

exrtremely low hanging fruit, ripe for the picking is PVD to:

RSW
PBI
MIA and
FLL (despite 1x WN, low season is 400+O&D)
even TPA and MCO are slighly held back due to a lack of competition...

Id like to see FL come to PVD with RSW PBI TPA and maybe even MIA, since we all know AA wont touch it. The have B6 tackle FLL and MCO and perhaps complementing FL seaosnally to RSW and PBI

Doesnt DL run BOS-RSW? might be some competition on that route. Does DL run BOS-FLL as well? I wonder if or how they will retailate.

DL, B6, and FL all operate non-stop BOS-FLL. DL and B6 operate non-stop BOS-RSW. There is enough demand on BOS-FLL that a daily 319 should have no problem being filled.

PVD is not returning to the Spirit network. That is why they are adding FLL-BOS.

Not sure if FL flew RSW-BOS last winter, but they will this winter, daily 73G.

NK filled nearly 450 daily seats for PVD-RSW during this past spring, so anyone who doesn't want to "fight for a slide of the pie", or is loosing for less competition, knows where to find it.

It remains to be seen, but i do believe that NK leaving PVD could be a blessing in disguise if a real LCC moves in their place next winter/spring.

Which terminal will NK operate from at Logan? Will they remain in Terminal B? Is there gate availability for them?
It is what it is.

Currently set to run November 7th through April 30th, but I think it will likely become year-round.

Currently they lease space from US Airways. I'm not sure how many gates they're guaranteed though they still have a fairly limited schedule so they can probably still get by with one gate. If they needed more, however, the former America West gates are still vacant, so I imagine they could move there if space constraints were an issue.

AA is not terribly fond on PVD, as evidenced by their extreme schedule slash last year. I wouldnt be suprised if DFW came back since its AA's power hub. PVD-MIA would be a perfect 100-120 seater route, kinda long for a CR7 and a 738 might be too big.

A 738 is not at all "too big". The route would easily fill a 757 between October and April and a 738 the rest of the year. Sadly, AA doesn't have the aircraft to go around, nor do they have an interest in the PVD market.
