LAX-SYD Flight Duration

Tue May 08, 2007 6:14 am

All of UA's LAX-SYD flights are blocked at around 14h45m. But, according to Flight Aware, the flight duration has only been about 7h30m-8h....Is this accurate?

The reason why I'm asking is I have a friend that is leaving tonight and he is expecting a 14h flight and was curious what the wheels up-touchdown time actually is....I was thinking around 14h, not 7h30m-8h....

I have noticed this sort of thing on Flight Aware on a number of routes.
I suspect that if you were to add in the time difference between LAX and SYD the problem would sort itself out and the flight time would pretty much jive with UA's schedule

Definately not. The quickest ive had it is 13 hours and the longest is 14.5 hours.
It is what it is...

They may make it in a bit early, but there's no way a present commercial airliner can make LAX-SYD in 8 hours.

As far as I know, FlightAware info is not accurate for international flights once they go beyond radar coverage range.

Time difference wise, at the moment 8am Tuesday Sydney time is 3pm Monday Los Angeles time.

If you were on the Qantas flight tonight on Tuesday May 8th departing LAX at around midnight, then this is 5pm Wednesday Sydney time. Add on your 14 hour flying time to Sydney and you would arrive at 2pm Los Angeles time on the Wednesday which is 7am Sydney time on Thursday. Does that make sense??

And that 7.5 hours is probably exactly how long it takes an LAX-SYD flight to leave radar coverage.

Last time I flew SYD-LAX it was a 13 hour 35 minutes flight, but it can vary depending on head winds.

I flew AKL-LAX yesterday and it was a 12 hour 10 minutes flight due to strong head winds (according to the captain first announcement when we took off it was supposed to be an 11 hour 35 minutes flight) but an 8 hour flight from Sydney to Los Angeles, only flying the Concorde (if it could be available, although I don't think it had the range).

Flightaware has a disclaimer that their trans-ocean tracking is not very accurate.

Yeap flightaware stops counting at a certain distance from the US. So flightaware is really not that great when it comes to international flights. Look at flights to Europe they ussually last like 4 hrs according to flightaware....so there, it is wrong

Time difference wise,

Flightaware doesn't pay attention to time differences. Most if not all airline itineraries do not either. While they give local times for arrival/departure, the duration is actual time flown (for a flight that stays in radar coverage), not the difference in the two local times.

Exactly. The flight obviously continues for quite a while longer after that.

no way!
Its usually between 14-14.75 hours. Maybe with a big tailwind etc and favourable approaches it could be cut down to about 13.
BTW the flight from SYD-LAX is usually about 45m-1h shorter due to better winds.

With Qantas AVOD system time passes by so quickly that you don't even realize it is a long flight. Yestarday I saw 3 movies, 2 Simpson's episodes and managed to sleep 2 hours. The worst part is that I did 4 flights on the same day: SYD-AKL on LA, then AKL-LAX on QF, missed my LAX-MEX connection on MX (1 hour delay in AKL, longer flight time and remote terminal at LAX contributed) so I ended up flying LAX-DFW and DFW-MEX on AA. Total flying time: 20 hours 10 minutes + 7 hours in airports...  tired

Yes but the boy is on united, so that won't help him much. Mind you I have to agree... On my last flight
to JFK I must have caught up on every movie I didn't have time to see throughout the year.

Everyone knows that. That's why the Cabin Crew/Pilots make an announcement for all the people that can't do the maths about how long they're going to be stuck on the plane.  Smile

Yep, UA's 744's are due for an upgrade... they've been too many years unchanged and the 1980s style overhead projector IFE just doesn't do it. Too bad UA doesn't use its 772ER's (which have PW4090's and could make this flight) which are much nicer to fly on for this prestige route.
