My Travel China Flights Axed!

Fri May 11, 2007 6:25 pm

My Travel have axed its Gatwick - Hainan flights just one week before they were due to commence. Rumours had been circulating about poor sales for the last several months. Specialists argue that China is too far to go for a beach holiday.

Has MYT axed the Manchester departures as well? I'm pretty sure I saw an arrival from Sanya last week.

There are better alternatives from London. MAN has no other direct flights to China, although it beats me why anyone would go to China to sit on a beach rather than visit the Great Wall and all the other attractions. Maybe MYT would not have been granted permission to serve somewhere more attractive like Beijing.

Is Sanya any good for spotting then?

Interesting... just a few points I'm curious about

What reason was given for the request for additional money and when did you have to pay them this by?

Was this just for your holiday, or was it the total amount for the whole of your party?

What was the total value of the holiday (either just for you, or for the whole of your party if more than just you travelling) before you were asked for more money?

Did you book direct with MyTravel or via a Travel Agent, and how was the refund process handled?

Cheers

Maybe I shouldn't say this about my fellow countrymen, but there will be a fair proportion of travellers flying MYT from the UK who don't quite realise that you can't see the Great Wall and the Forbidden City from your beachfront hotel in Sanya.

Do the Chinese have banana boats?  duck

i was given 2 days to pay it, and the reason given was additional costs that they had incurred.

it was per person, so for 2 of us they wanted an extra £600.

the total value before was £1400, and it was booked with apollo holidays who are a subsidury of MyTravel Holidays i think. for the refund they asked if i wanted to go ahead so i said no, and they did some searching around and they couldnt find me the hol i had booked for the original price on other dates.

kinda glad i aint going there now. anyone know what they are gonna do about the passenger who already booked from gatwick? will they be offered alternitive holidays, refunds or departure from MAN on a different day?

i eventually booked a 2 week hol in sri lanka for the same price but AI with first choice. ive heard First Choice are a lot better for long haul. is this true as ive only ever done long haul with Scheduled Airlines.

Certainly, not a beach destination for that reason only, but neither are Spain or Greece, or plenty of other destinations that we visit primarily to enjoy sand, sea and.... whatever.

A search on http://images.google.co.uk/images?q=...0&svnum=10&um=1&hl=en&start=0&sa=N would suggest that China could be an excellent destination for the beach lovers... (need to watch out for the military training though  Wink)

Great specialists. I wonder what they'll say about people travelling to Malaysia, Southern Thailand and Bali  Smile

I wouldn't be that disappointed if I was you, unless you were booked on Mariott/Hilton in Yalong Bay, and was total fine with staying inside the premises for the entire vacation. The rest is basically just crap (having only stayed in "the rest" myself). There is no atmosphere at all, and the people visiting seem to behave even more inappropriate than Europeans (I won't go to specific Big grin) charter tourists in Spain.

Quoting MainMAN (Reply 9):

Indeed they do. And tonnes of other weirdo noise-making beach activities. A beach bar can be hard to find though, and the Hainan price level is ridiculously high compared to the rest of China.

Another available banana, is a 70-80 meter high grotesque ugly Buddha statue in the middle of the water - if you are lucky, you can see it from the approach to SYX, if not, just forget it Big grin

Well, as you can see, I'm not a My Travel sales guy, which I guess could have explained the empty flights...

Yup First Choice are excellent for long-haul compared to MyTravel. 33" Legroom and AVOD IFE in Y (aka Star Class) and 36" in Star Class Premier...to name a few perks that you get with FCA.
MAN-PVR Via SFB, First Choice FCA012 14/03/07 (by Dazbo5 Apr 10 2007 in Trip Reports) and PVR-MAN, First Choice Airways FCA013 28/03/07 (by Dazbo5 Apr 20 2007 in Trip Reports)

Thanks for that reply, I'd say you haven't been treated particularly well...

You were asked to pay the additional money within 2 days - even now My Travel expect no more than a deposit on a holiday in August, so that would appear unreasonable

They failed to explain the additional costs - if you look at MyTravel's T&C of booking, there isn't a great deal they will surcharge on. It's hardly reasonable to expect you to cough up a near 50% increase on the price of the hiliday without explaining what this is for.

I can't find any reference to a UK tour operator or travel agent called Apollo Holidays.. so were you booking with a company in the UK? (Apollo Travel however is part of the Co-Op - is this who you mean?)

At least the refund seems to have been handled ok though...

To me, something isn't quite right. The surcharge is massive and unexplained, and there was pressure to pay it outside of the tour operators payment guidelines....

Anyway.... have a good time in Sri Lanka... let us know how your holiday to a (civil) war zone goes...

i dont think its apollo holidays as thats registered in stoke on trent and on my bank statemnt it says Apollo Late Sales Rotherham. it did kinda well annoy me but i think sri lanka is probably gonna be better as there would have been additional costs with the china one anyways such as visas and anti-malaria pills.

Very very poor show. Wonder if that was to do with the travel agent or MyTravel, either way, very unreasonable, and glad you told them where to shove it!

Apollo Travel are registered with ABTA in Rotheram, and a member of Co-op.

It sounds very clear to me that the agent (Apollo) have made a pricing error and this is why they have requested the extra money. The only thing MyTravel have been requiring customers to pay is the increase in the APD charge above and beyond the 2% ABTA require them to cover. FYI, Apollo is not affiliated to MyTravel Group PLC in any way, shape or form.

Sanya has been selling very well here in the North of England. There is more to Hainan then meets the eye with quite a lot of excursion and points of interest available on the island itself. MyTravel also offer Hainan and Beijing twin centre as well as optional 1 or 2 night visits to Hong Kong. There is certainly A LOT more to this destination then your more established 'far away' resorts.

As more you not classing this a beach destination, take a look at this:

The resorts are modern out in Sanya as are the hotels and when it comes down to value for money, two weeks for about £580pp… need I say more?

In other MyTravel news:

MyTravel Airways has become the world's first charter airline to be awarded an internationally recognised safety accreditation.

Following a nine month project, MyTravel Airways' airline and engineering divisions were awarded the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) Registration.

The airline's managing director Frank Pullman said: "It has been a long, but worthwhile project, as we put our existing operational safety and quality management processes and procedures to the test."

i dont think its possible to get the holiday for £580 now. think its a minimum of about £750 for all departures dates, so long as you dont get it as a last minute. plus theres the fuel duty on top

In fairness those destinations are a different market from the UK. Not many Europeans go to Bali for a 'fly and flock' beach holiday (although a few Australians certainly do). From what I can make out Hainan is unfortunately determined to re-invent itself as the new Benidorm.

OK, At least from DK Bali was a quite popular Asian destination before the bombings, can't see why people would choose Hainan instead, except for the marginally shorter flight? It'd bet a lot of things on that almost no one who have visited various Asian beach location has Hainan as their favourite  Smile

Living in CAN though, things are a bit different. It is a very affordable plane ticket to SYX, to get a weekend off the fumes in the big city. Expect a beach where you can relax all day with a good book, but nothing more than that  Smile
