Spotting At EWR

Wed Aug 02, 2000 2:31 pm

Hey everyone, ive just recently become interested in airplane spotting. The closest big Airport to me is EWR-Newark Intl. Does anyone have any good spots for spotting planes close up, especially international carriers. Any suggestions would be great.

If you drive on the NJ Turnpike near exits (14a, b, c)
Not sure of the numbers, but right before Elizabeth
Seaport, you will be driving along a runway. The
best places to spot are the parking lot of the Ikea/
Toys R Us superstores across the turnpike. There
is decent spotting inside the Terminals (A, B, C),
and the gap between terminals B and C you can
see a lot of Continental activity, often 757's and
777's park right there at the gates nearest.

If you are flying into Newark on an International
Flight, the arrivals hall in Terminal B sits high
above the airport tarmac and there is a fantastic
panoramic view of the activity.

Newark isn't a pretty airport. There is no green
to be found and it is surrounded by industry,
but it is a cool airport nonetheless.

Enjoy your spotting.

In terminal A there is an observation deck where you get a close up view of United Airlines planes. Right in front you will see the express jets, and a little further behind that are the big planes. The main terminal windows provide a great view of the planes sitting by the gates, and the monorail rides right over the activity. Good luck!

Also, the best spotting is from 4-8 PM, that's when all of the international flights are there. I flew into EWR a few weeks ago, and the flight arrived at 7. I saw many international airliners, including Air France, British Airways, Alitalia, Iberia, and Aer Lingus. Have fun spotting.

The monorail is great for spotting! Furthermore, the monorail allows one to view aircraft from each of the passsenger terminals; when you get tired of one, simply hop aboard and go to the next terminal. (This also allows you to leave your car in one lot and tour Terminals A, B, and C.) I don't know of any other places where one can pull over and take pictures. Security is pretty tight, with tall chain-link fences and patrols, and the traffic patterns around the airport are a nightmare. In the late afternoon and early evening, you will see a huge variety of airlines. In September, check out the airliners collectables (a.k.a. mania) show at the Newark Mariott.

From Route 1 North, follow the signs for the North Area. Just before the NA parking lot, there is a street leading to various cargo depots. Drive all the way to the Virgin Cargo building parking lot, and you'll find yourself surprisingly close to Rwy 11/29, separated only by a fence.

If the winds are favorable and the a/c are queued up for a Rwy 22R depature, you'll witness a parade of a/c as they taxi onto 22R from taxiway W.

As Cba mentioned, 4-8pm is the best time. I've found about 6:30 to be ideal.

If you have a scanner, tune to 118.3 Mhz for the EWR tower "play-by-play." Enjoy.

RE: Monorail Construction

The monorail isn't "Under Construction", at least not at the airport. Its under repair. They need to replace the track heaters before the winter, and this will take a few months, forcing the monorail onto a limited schedule and/or closure. Also, construction at Terminal C is also slowing it down. The monorail IS under construction where it will be connecting to the NJ Transit line. Most of this is done, and I passed by it the other day and noticed they even have a car on the track. Should make things convenient. Would be nice to pay maybe $10 to get to EWR by train, instead of $1 each way on the Turnpike (I hate Route 9) and then parking fees that mount as the hours go by.
