Aeromexico, Mexicana To Add LIT?

Sat May 12, 2007 8:03 am

from KATV-Little Rock

"Two airlines based in Mexico are in talks to offer direct flights between Little Rock and Mexico. "

"Little Rock National Airport spokesman Phil Launius says the airport hopes that the airlines will make Little Rock the hub for operations in Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri and Tennessee. "

"Discussions between the airport and two airlines have been taking place for about a year."

This would be huge news for LIT and it would possibly speed up the decision on whether to add to or build a whole new terminal.

That would be quite the shocker.

Last time I heard St. Louis had talked to Mexicana but to no avail. Does Little Rock have something to offer over 2.5-3.0M places like MSP, STL, CLE?

I'm with the poster above. Nashville has "talked" with the Mexican airlines, but that doesn't mean they are going to start service to here. Let alone hub the place out. LIT and places like MEM and BNA do have larger amounts of Mexican people in them than most people on here would think though. That alone would warrant a good look from those two airlines. I would be surprised, but I wouldn't be "shocked" if it happens. But I see it happening in larger markets first and then perhaps in LIT.

It's hard to believe. I mean Little Rock has a relatively miniscule Mexican American population. I guess if there is strong cargo potential, it might work, but even that is difficult to understand. At less than 1000nm between MEX and LIT, they could use a small aircraft. On the other hand, this may be a 2nd tier Mexican Airline and not MX or AM, such as Aero California, etc (DC9-32s).. Interesting though..

I highly doubt either airline would choose to go to LIT over bigger markets in Central and South America where both of these airlines are concentrating on for now. Also, I would imagine that BNA, MSY, or even NAS, MSP, and DTW would be better choices for them, though I think that for now they have nowehere left to turn to in terms of a US Profitable route... specially after MX just pulled out of BWI. Perhaps I think that AM might be the more likely choice (thought doubtful) to even fathom the thought of going to LIT as they are making some rather senseless choices as MGA and SAP which have been discussed on a separate thread as mere ¨Aircraft Utilization Practices". But it this ever comes to fruiction.... good luck to either of them.

Hispanic growth in Arkansas is greater than North Carolina but CLT and LIT both have consulates.

from Wikipedia,

By race White Black AIAN Asian NHPI
North Carolina:
Growth 2000-2005 (Hispanic only) 48.62% 20.36% 25.79% 27.15% 21.63%

Arkansas:
Growth 2000-2005 (Hispanic only) 51.65% 43.64% 30.22% 28.97% 16.86%

It would be a shocker though if LIT got it.

% Growth may be a but higher, but actual popn is still significantly below: NC (569,000) and Arkansas (126,000).

I've read about a few airports trying to lure MX, AM and any other foreign carrier that wants to give it a go. I don't see AM or MX landing at LIT anytime soon.

NAS, as in Nassau,The Bahamas?

That's pretty obscure considering when most Mexicans visit the Caribbean they go to Cuba,Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. They have bigger fish to fry right now, but in 10 years it may not be such a bad idea  twocents

I'm not going to hold my breath considering Aeromexico and Mexicana have applied for Austin, Charlotte, Cleveland, Detroit, Minneapolis, Oakland, San Fransisco, Stockton, Philadelphia, San Antonio, Toronto, Washington Dulles (probably missing a few) to no avail. They love sitting on dormant frequencies  wink

Small correction, but Austin and San Antonio did happen for AM. Austin is doing quite poorly, though.

Exactly, not every city in the US means a gold pot for AM/MX. They have to make a good search in their US expansion plan in order to hit the nail within the coffin. It's sometimes not that obvious as people think and AUS is the perfect example of a poorly performing route.

Specially Aeromexico, but yes they do love doing that. Though MX's been pretty passive lately regarding expansion.

Me neither, they don't have a small branch of their airlines with small planes in order to start cities which won't fit A318's or 737's. ( Even though they have Aerolitoral and Click, they go MAINLY, with it exceptions into domestic traffic)

That's why Continental and Delta have a huge success with their millions of routes into their Mexican destinations as they send RJ's, etc..

Couldn´t agree more. there are several city pairs both domestic and intl that could justify a daily RJ´s, or even a Turboprop. See Aeromar success.

Just to name a few, which BTW I fly often (having to connect if course)

TIJ-LAS (I have to go to SAN)
TIJ-LAX /SFO (I have to go to SAN or drive instead) Although I read DL is starting this route soon.
GDL-SAT
GDL-VSA (Alma is starting this route but with a stopover at VER, and the price is NOT that attractive. So I stick to AM)
GDL-OAX (Avolar serves this, but it is not daily)

As they have no competition!! But they better be careful... IMHO Aerolitoral should enter the scene!!! In order to survive, Aerolitoral should go and push more routes out from MEX and compete directly and against VW and get more revenue just reducing by little AeroMar's outrageous fares!!!

I don't see how it would be so far fetched as some has said before. I mean, BFL and FAT both now have flights to Mexico on Mexicana.
Change is: one airline, six continents!

They (the two cities you mentioned) are part of a larger metropolitan area, and already have a large base of affluent Hispanics and tourist to pull from. None of which LIT has yet in large amounts. I mean seriously, if they don't even serve markets that are larger and more lucrative than LIT, what makes you think they would serve LIT before them? The economics are just not there. LIT doesn't even have service to Canada yet. If I was LIT, I would worry about getting Toronto on the map before getting any routes south of the border.

I was referring to the AUS/SAT-CUN service they applied for recently.
