Direct Flights From New York To Rzeszow, Poland

Sat May 12, 2007 11:22 pm

Hello everyone!

Just read on the LO website that they are starting direct flights from NYC to RZE. According to Wikipedia, the city of Rzeszow has a population of about 168,000. Does it make sense for LO to even start these flights? I'm assuming they will be using B767 on that route, can they even fill it? I don't believe RZE has potential of a hub that will be used for connecting flights.

Leo.

This was actually announced a while ago, but yes it doesn't make much sense to me either. If they were going to start flights to North America from another new city I was thinking Gdansk would of been the front runner for that. BTW LO currently has five 763's and two 762's in their fleet - Anyone know if the 762's still used for routes to North American or do they use them on routes inside of Europe? Thanks!

LOT's B762 are used for Transatlantic flights. In Europe they use only B737s and regional aircraft.

In addition to 10 E-170s and 6 E-175s.

direct flights

Flight 19 JFK-RZE shows non-stop and flight 23 shows RZE-EWR non-stop. I saw "direct" and figured there would be a stop in WAW, just keeping the same flight number. Guess direct and non-stop are used interchangeably in some situations.

Good deal for LO! Hope it exceeds their expectations.

There aren't a lot of immigrants in the States from the northern part of the country, and while Gdansk is a lovely city, there isn't a lot of tourist or business demand. Most of New Yorks's immigrants come from Podkarpacie (where Rzeszow is) and other parts of southern Poland.

They also fly 767s to TLV.

I used to think this, but as I visit RZE regularly I see the potential.
South East Poland, North West Ukraine, Southern Slovakia and South East Hungary basically has no major airports and only a few recent (Sky Europe / Wizz Air EU) options that have just started.

Other than that it's a 12 hour drive/train ride to Budapest, Vienna, Krakow or Warsaw if your flying long haul.

For 300 miles east or south of Rzeszow, this will be the only airport with a US long haul connection.
Thats a much better option than any other airport in Poland.

That encompasses a very large catchment area (Zamosc, Tarnow, Kosice (Slovakia), Miscolc (Hungary), Lvov (Ukraine) even as far as Transylvania (Roumania)...

for many with 6 hours drive to Rzeszow.. this is pretty much your only airport to fly from.

With an extra 2 hours driving you can reach Krakow or fly from RZE to WAW.

For an example...

FR offers the only other service from RZE.. to London Daily.. the fares on this route have not been less than £200 roundtrip all year ! - that says something.

Since FR started to RZE, PKP increased its rail service to RZE from Ukraine.. which clearly points the way !!
So far in 2008 45 flights and Gold already. JFK, IAD, LGA, SIN, HKG, NRT, AKL, PPT, LAX still to book ! Home Airport LCY

I guess that makes sense. Some of my relatives live in Poznan and Torun so we always do ORD-WAW-POZ on LO to go visit. I'm really surprised that none of the major US carriers fly to WAW. Also, is there service from YYZ to both WAW and KRK on LO?

LO flies to ORD / NYC / YYZ from WAW

and ORD / NYC from KRK on alternate days.

LO has just aquired another 767 (or is about to) I believe.

I know a number of people in the New York Brooklyn area who are from Rzeszow / Jaroslaw / Tarnow / Lvov / Kosice and Miskolc area.

Many of whom today only speak polish or hungarian. I believe the same is true in Chicago.

Historically Lvov was part of Poland, Rzeszow /Krakow / Kosice was part of Austria-Hungary.

In the summer schedule, KRK sees 8 weekly ORD flights, and 1 weekly to both JFK and EWR. YYZ gets service to WAW only.

Oh really? Are they getting another one just becuase of the RZE service or do they plan on increasing frequency on other routes? This would bring their 767 count up to 8 unless this one is supposed to replace a 762.

New 767 is probably for RZE for now, but there are plans to fly WAW-PEK.

.....And congrats to Poland/Ukraine for winning the 2012 UEFA Cup over my favored Itay 8 votes to 4.

Hopefully this RZE-NYC flight will be just the first salvo in more transAtlantic service to the region.
It has only been a few years since their independence from the Soviet Union, and bringing the area up to the level of the rest of Europe takes time....
This route should be booked solid all summer, even though the city that the airport calls home is rather small.

This is good for LOT though, in terms of expansion. At the moment a LOT (no pun intended) of Poles fly LH via Germany, as do most of the Americans I know who live there, en route back to the US (I lived there for 6 years). No one I know/knew ever flew via CDG or LHR either, always (pretty much) FRA.

Poland was never a part of the Soviet Union. However a substantial part of Poland became part of the Ukraine after WWII and remains there to this day (city of Lvov included).

I've also seen Poles flying AY and SK and connecting through HEL and CPH. This is not a matter of supporting their country's carrier but it's all about getting the best possible deal on the tickets, which are rather expensive these days. I've also seen people flying from NYC to other countries in Europe and connecting in WAW on LO. In the end it's all about the prices.

To the US? I can understand SK but AY has limited US connections; focussing more on the Asian market. Any flights other than to JFK are probably routed WAW-HEL-JFK on AY, than codeshare with AA onwards.

I am fully aware of the world history involved.....the point was the fact that Eastern Europe was controlled tightly by the Soviet Union, or surpressed what have you, until the fall of the Warsaw Pact and Soviet Union in the late 1980s.
Poland might have well been an independent nation; however there is no denial in it being wholly controlled by Moscow.

There's plenty to question about that, actually. Poland was probably the most independent country in the Eastern Bloc for most of the Cold War. While Soviet control was there, it's inaccurate to say that it was 'wholly controlled.'

Poland, Baltic States and Russia are important markets for AY's HEL-JKF route.

Does anyone know when in 2008 LO's 787 are supposed to start being delivered? My parents said that we're going to go to Poland next summer finally and I'd like to fly on their 763 one last time. It'd probably be in June or July so I'm hoping the 787's come later.

You'll get Your LO 763 (and maybe even 762) ride for sure. Their first 787 won't arrive until October 2008.
