Same Airline, Destination, Indentical Dep Time?

Sun May 13, 2007 10:31 am

Hey,

With looking at the departure sequences on the flight information boards (TBIT) in LAX, I've noticed that on occasion some of the airlines operate multiple flights to the same destination within minutes of each other. This makes sense to me, obviously there are certain connections to made wherever those flights are going, or maybe just sufficient O&D or combination of the two. I'm just curious as to some examples of airlines in this practice from other airports. I would imagine the NY-London corridor has a couple examples of this. Thanks.

6:20pm and 6:20pm on American/American Eagle from St. Louis into Dallas - Ft. Worth and Dallas Love Field.

a slight stretch ... but if you're flying just between those two city pairs.
if assumptions could fly, airliners.net would be the world's busiest airport

If you were looking at departure board at the TBIT at LAX, then more than likely what you were seeing was not actually multiple airlines' flights departing at identical times to identical destinations. You were likely looking at a departure board reflecting codeshare flights operated by one airline, but sold by both carriers. Example: QANTAS (QF) flight 94 departs LAX TBIT at 2340 headed to MEL, and so does American (AA) flight 7356. But these are not two different flights -- they are the same flight, operated by one carrier (QF) and codeshared on by another (AA).

lol, please...I'm a flight attendant...they were not codeshares, I can read a departure board. This is my fault for indentifing similar departure times as identical departure times (within an hour or maybe slightly more) The reason I ask is it seemed very uncommon at LAX, and I'm just interested in other airports, other examples. All out of curiosity. Thanks and I apologize for the confusion.

Australian Government's "two-airline policy" in force until the 1990's. Until the 80's, TAA and Ansett operated identical aircraft on identical flights at the same time. The policy slightly shifted when TAA ordered the A300 and Ansett refused to buy that aircraft, opting for the 767-200 instead.

What you are noticing is the overall reduction of widebodies from the U.S. airline fleets.

AA for example went from running nothing but widebodies to the East Coast, to what? 757s and 767s?

To meet that need for early morning departures, between 6a to 8a, airlines need to run side-by-side departures to maintain the demand they once met with larger capacity aircraft, but yet has grown since.

when LH still had their 2 daily 744s on FRA-MEX, they also departed pretty close to each other (like 45 minutes or so).

this all is simply because many markets have a certain time pattern that suits market needs.

check SIN-Europe or BKK-Europe e.g.

tons of flights going out at ~ midnight.

BA does this quite often to/from SE Asia

How about the BA flights to SIN:

BA11 departs 2125 hrs followed by BA15 at 2135. Both codeshared with QF. QF metal flies at 2205 (w/BA c/s)

BA to HKG:

BA31 departs 2115 hrs followed by BA27 departing at 2215.

BA to BKK:

BA009 departs 2200 hrs (QF codeshare) followed by QF002 departing at 2215 (BA codeshare)

Often on high density routes, when flights depart within minutes of each other to a hub, each is a "thru" flight past that hub. I.e. they can be sold as "direct" flights....such as

MCO-ATL-LAX
MCO-ATL-LGA

SFO-DEN-MCI
SFO-DEN-PHL

LAX-PHX-ORD
LAX-PHX-ABQ

MSP-DTW-IND
MSP-DTW-DCA

BOS-PHL-STL
BOS-PHL-DFW

For today (Monday), NW has a 3:05, 3:15 and 3:18 departure from DTW to MSP on a pair of 757s and a DC-9-50; they also have a 7:01p and a 7:06p set (A320 and 757-300) and an 1133a and 1155a pair on a DC-9-50 and A320.

There are also instances of this on the return route.

My appologies. Was just trying to give some general info on the subject.

But in that case, some of my post was relevant;

BA fly LHR - JFK departing at 8.55 on a 747
And LHR - EWR departing at 8.55 on a 777

VS fly LHR - JFK departing at 16.00 on a 747/346
And LHR - EWR departing at 16.00 on a 747

All from London, to New York.
