Why The An-124 At IAD?

Wed May 16, 2007 3:58 am

Hi all. I've been "lurking" these forums for years, but finally decided that I've waited too long to join!

Anyway, here's my question... Twice now I've seen Antonov aircraft in IAD airspace. About a year ago I saw an An-225 on arrival on 19R (blew my mind)... and just this afternoon, I saw an An-124 climbing out (FlightAware info below). What do these aircraft do/deliver/service out of Dulles? I'd wouldn't expect aircraft of that type in a major commercial airport like that... unless it was strictly cargo. Thoughts?

Volga-dnepr "Volga-dnepr" (Russian Federation)
Aircraft Antonov Ruslan (quad-jet) (H/A124/R)
Origin Washington Dulles Int'l (KIAD)
Destination Gander Int'l (CYQX)

It is currently on it's way to Helsinki. Probably transporting huge HVAC units or power turbines.
Good Luck to all Skyway Pilots! It's been great working with you!
