Bad ATC Day Today (Tue)

Wed May 16, 2007 7:14 am

Looks like storms are cutting the US in half today. Going to be hard to route flights through this mess. Looks like a ton of dept delays already.

This began last night. Long line of convectivity associated with a frontal boundary along a line from the northern Rockies through the southern Great Plains.

I was aboard AA 697 ORD-LAX. The typical ORD-LAX routing would be this:

BAE FOD J94 ONL SNY J100 BCE J60 HEC CIVET5

However, due to a particularly nasty line of storms that formed along a line from NW Illinois - E Iowa to the KN - OK border, this is the route we got:

RBS STL J8 IFI PNH J6 DRK J231 TNP SEAVU1

Should make for an interesting summer with the increase in operations being reported by most enroute centers and the busier TRACONS.

A few days ago PHL went down along with CLT and boy did that hurt my day. Westbounders were bneing ground stopped across the North East. Going into LGA there were numerous tops painting 46 grand and higher just west of the airport and than at LGA a fast 5 minute shower and nothing else. Last summer was terrible though. We landed at TPA on 18 Left right into the face of a massive storm. It was about 1.5 miles from the south side of TPA as we corssed the numbers. We rolled all the way to the last 2,000 feet of the runway and it was like rolling into a wall of water. By the time we were chocked the airport was sealed tighter than a clams posterior.

On a side note, one of the most interesting daily reads (IMO) is this:

http://www.ato.faa.gov/DesktopModules/ViewDocument.aspx?DocumentID=105

Essentially a capsule report of FAA ops activity, along with the factors affecting local, TRACON, and enroute operations. Published Monday through Friday.

Things are pretty nasty in YYZ right now. Listening to live ATC is great. Glad I'm not working tonight :P
