Am AUS-MEX Service May End By July

Not at all surprising to me based on my flights with them recently, but the Austin American-Statesman article seems to affirm my suspicions of the flight ending sooner than later.

That is, apparently if AUS can manage to staff an evening shift of customs agents to stop by and process arriving passengers, then the route could apparently be right-sized with a daily 50-seat RJ. Otherwise, the flight goes to 1x weekly starting in June before ending in July.

Just five months after it started Austin's first nonstop international service, Aeroméxico could be pulling up its landing gear for good.

Mexico's largest airline said Tuesday that it will scale back flights at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport next month and end service July 1 after it failed to gain federal clearance to change flight times and expand service from four to seven days a week.

The airline can't do that unless the federal government agrees to add customs agents to handle new evening flights arriving from Mexico City. Without the schedule changes, the airline says it is losing too much money to stay in Austin beyond this summer.

"The name implies that it is an international airport," said Carlos de Uriarte, sales manager for the Aeroméxico's Texas region. But "it seems Austin is not prepared for international flights."

The airport has customs agents only to handle daytime flights. In an April 3 letter to the airline, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency said it would not add agents to handle evening flights, citing budget, staffing and other concerns.


I plan on living forever. So far, so good...

Well that sucks! I was always under the impression it wasn't doing very well. If that was the case, why would they want to ADD 3 flights a week? It's always frustrating when an airline can't succeed on a route based on a third party (USCBP). Anyone in the know have some info to clear this out?

Also, when is AUS-MIA on AA coming?!?!

Why bother with any AUS-MEX service at all if not daily? SAT already has daily service to ME with both Mexicana and AM. It's only a 70 mile drive to San Antonio from Austin. I never understood why Austin and San Antonio never built an airport approximately halfway between both cities.

In short, they would downsize the route by using 50-seat RJ's instead of the 737's that are on it now. My two flights were on par with what the article stated: roughly 1/4 full. And most of them were like me traveling for leisure, which likely makes the route even more unprofitable.

I do think that a daily RJ morning departure and evening arrival could work well for those on business, or at least better than the current schedule that has you arriving in MEX at COB and back again to AUS in early afternoon. And as the article states, if connections can be more easily made, even better for filling the plane.

I hope that the airport does what it can to the Customs employee schedules to make this flight work, but at this point it does not appear likely. Perhaps in a few more years after Austin has gained even more business and residents, someone else will give an int'l flight like this a shot. In the meantime, I think it means that we'll need to pack our bags and drive down to SAT for such a flight, or simply connect in DFW or IAH.

Probably because no one wants to drive 50+ miles to get to the airport. Especially those that live further out in North Austin and the suburbs. From where I am it's around 25 miles and I think that's a good distance. When SH130 is completed to 71 it'll be real easy for me to get to the airport. No way do I want to be stuck going down 35 to the San Marcos area to catch a flight. Same could probably be said for those coming up from San Antonio.

Doesn't surprise me. CBP are a bunch of incompetent a$$holes similar to the TSA, although infinitely more intelligent and competent. Several airlines tried adding additional service to Mexico from SLC and couldn't because CBP didn't want to stay open long enough, even though the hours it was open didn't have any international arrivals.

If a route doesn't perfom, AM decreases the flights to twice or three times per week, or suspends the flights all together. I would much rather they shift the flying to Aerolitoral, and keep it daily. AUS is within range of the RJ, and its a perfect example.

I believe that the FAA wanted SAT and AUS to build a joint airport back in the 70's but neither city went for it. As SammyK said, no one wants to drive the 50 miles from either city to go to the airport, let alone driving 20 miles to get out of the city in the first place.

So on what day of the week will AM be operating this flight during June/July?

I think serving the route 1x daily at a different schedule with ERJ145s would be a good idea, but it is a shame that the U.S. federal authorities are not willing to accomodate AM's request. Seems AM will indeed say goodbye to AUS.

Does anybody think that the cancellation of AM's MEX-AUS flights could result in added capacity to SAT? Something like 3 additional weekly flights with 73Ws or MD87s? I am aware of the distance issue, but MEX-SAT flights are always full (at least with MX... I have not tried with AM) and maybe some people won't mind driving.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

Well, the MEX-SAT route is flown with 737-700Ws but, according to the SkyTeam website's itinerary planner, there is a Sunday in August (date of my search), when the flight is operated with an MD-87. I am not sure whether this was a mistake or whether AM is simply managing aircraft allocation according to the loads.

Hmm, checked it myself and seems to be an MD. I will have to mark my calendar and go to the airport that day to see what comes!

Just a quick follow-up...

The AUS-MEX route will not end in July after all. Looks like 3x weekly on RJs.
I plan on living forever. So far, so good...

Great news! I am glad AM is using 5D's Embraers to fly this route instead. I wish AM great success... maybe they can reschedule the flights at some point and ultimately offer daily service again.
