Have Kalitta Bought 747s N744CK/N747CK For Spares?

Wed May 16, 2007 8:37 pm

Greetings all,

Does anyone know if Kalitta plan on using their 2 recently purchased 747s from JAL?

N744CK (22065) was ferried Tokyo - Willow Run - Oscoda on 12 May as CKS744
N747CK (21743) was ferried Hong Kong - Novy - Anchorage - Rickenbacker - JFK - Oscoda on 12-14 May as CKS821/9747.

Oscoda is a very quiet airport and not much seems to go on here although after doing some searching it appears to be a maintenance base for CKS and a new hangar is being built to accomodate 747 size aircraft.

Were the above flights the last flights for those airframes and they will be used for spares to keep the others in the air, or will they be put into service with CKS?

Anyone know?

Thanks!

Rob

Kalitta Air´s active fleet has registrations going from N701CK up to N719CK with few numbers missing inbetween. A "high" number far from this sequence points towards using these aircraft for spares, and N744 CK (and btw N745CK which has been bought at the same time from JAL) will almost for sure be used as a spares source, as it is an aging passenger aircraft which has seen 25 years of continuous service. I don´t think Kalitta wants to start passenger service with them (back in the 90s they had one or two passenger 747s).
N747CK I have no clear idea though I´d expect they´ll operate this aircraft as it is a pure freighter and its younger than many 747s Kalitta has in its active fleet, and younger than the other ex-JAL freighters Kalitta operates.

Would be cool to see photos of these two in OSC before they're parted out.....

As a JAL Cargo guy, I can tell you that Kalitta LOVES our airplanes. I suspect they'll keep 747CK (which I saw parked at the Polar ramp here in Anchorage on Saturday or Sunday) active, as our planes are typically far better off than theirs.

It looked like it was our old 8161J, but I couldn't be sure... it's hard to identify an aircraft by damage repairs sometimes!

N747CK is ex JA8165, originally a Pan Am aircraft.

Connie has several hundred employees on the old sac base. I believe he has purchased part ,or all of the base. Kalitta has scraped some frames there already, I don't know any numbers?
