Runway 5/23 At CLT

Thu May 17, 2007 1:36 am

Hey guys,
I have a question about Runway 5/23 at CLT. Does the airport ever use runway 5 for takeoffs or landings? I know they use Runway 23 for landings since my Dad's office is right under the approach path for Runway 23. If my memory is right I think I have only seen Runway 5 used for a takeoff off.....it was a Delta MD-80 taking off while the plane I was on (an AA MD-80) was taxing for a takeoff on runway 36L. That was back in the late 1990s though and I don't recall having seen Runway 5 having been used since.

Thanks guys!

Airport nav charts still show Rwy 5 for late nite landings for noise abatement. Airport probably should extend the runway to intersect with the end of new Runway 18-36W & use it as a taxiway during normal ops. It could be used as a backup for longhaul departures when needed as it would probably exceed 12,000' if extended.

Countless times. I've landed on it too many times to count. Never departed on it though. I do know USEx uses it for departures . . .

I've had flights land on 5, but it's very rare that they do. The first time it was due to a medical emergency, and we were headed up from PBI.

They use 32 to land on a lot so they can use the 18's for simultaneous operations.

That's interesting, as every time I've come in late in the past 3 or 4 years, we've used 36L.

It is used for departures late at night and early in the morning. 23 gets used for arrivals if they are using 18LR. I have taken off of 5 lots of times when working the first CLT-LGA flight

Last time I went through CLT two years ago, we used 5/23 (don't remember which direction) as an early morning arrival (we were on the ground at CLT at around 620a after the 19 minute flight from GSO) and then used it on the last departure out of CLT to GSO (around 1150p that night).

That makes since about the late night/early morning departure and arrivals. The only time I am ever out at the airport is during the day so don't see the action there late at night or early in the morning.

Thanks everyone for your responses!

Flew on an ASA CRJ700 a few years back from CLT-ATL. It was one of the first flights of the morning. We used Rwy 05...it caught me off gaurd at first. I've flown out of CLT 50+ times and that is the only time I've ever departed on 05. I've arrived on 23 many times.
Cheers,
Markus

Yeah, I've seen it, but it's weird, because at least at night, 36L seems MUCH more common.

I have done it. It is as said above mainly a night time departure or very early morning. I have seen it though other times. Once taxing out we saw the KHA 737 use it for a departure.
