Frontier To Outfit Entire Fleet With Leather Seats

Thu May 17, 2007 11:30 pm

Sometimes I stumble upon these little goodies...

I spoke with an F9 pilot (one of my neighbors). He claimed that F9 is going "all leather." He claimed they are doing this to save costs in the long run; apparently leather is cheaper to maintain than fabric. I asked him how he knew this, for I had not heard any whispers around...he claimed that there are actual rows of leather seats at this time in the F9 hanger at DIA. And I'll tell you first-hand, this neighbor of mine...he's not one to start rumors about his company...he also said that the "cat has been out-of-the-box" for some time now...and we'll see the "leather" marketing push in ads to soon come.

F9 is certainly turning up the heat. Good for them.
Ding! You are now free to keep supporting Frontier.

It also can be uncomfortable as hell. Why airlines think that leather seats are something to boast about is a mystery.

I'd rather have a cloth seat with proper lumbar support than a leather seat that hurts my back after a few hours.....

I'm inclined to agree with you. I find Frontier's current seats unusually comfortable... they even have some added thigh bolstering in the seat bottom cushions. I'll also miss the pretty forest green with pine needle pattern on the current cloth... it's rather unique.

I've always found that I tend to slide downward in leather seats... and they get rather hot and even sticky during long flights (such as my usual DEN-DCA-DEN runs).

Leather is easier to clean as it doesn't stain. And it generally lasts longer. A better investment for the airlines in the long term.

CO used to have some INCREDIBLY comfortable leather seats on some its 727-200 fleet. Just because the seat is leather it doesn't automatically mean that the seat will be uncomfortable...problem is, a lot of airlines just take the cloth off the seat frame and put the leather on, so it's not really a new seat. ALA Delta. I think the 738 with leather is very uncomfortable because they covered up the leather headrest with leather, so it's just kind of awkward. DL M88 in all leather is fine, however, because the M88 cloth seats were always very comfortable.

Well a cloth seat with lumbar support is better than a leather seat with lumbar support. Even though leather is easier to maintain, I believe from a passenger perspective that the breathability of the leather is a negative thing. Especially when you go running to a flight and sit in a leather seat....yuck.

I hope they keep the adjustable headreasts if this is true. They make it much more enjoyable on an overnight or long transcon-like flight.

Its been "out of the box" at least since yesterday when Mariner posted it in this thread:

Its good to know it is close at hand.

US doesn't. Thats why on their international flights all the Envoy class seats are cloth seats, while the coach seats are leather.
