NW Launching YOW-MSP August 1st

Fri May 18, 2007 3:01 am

Excellent news. YOW is finally starting to get new transborder capacity after cutbacks in 2006. This is YOW's third new transborder route in the past year. The others being CVG and TPA (Nov-May seasonal), but we lost C6's weekly SRQ seasonal.

Northwest Airlines Announces New Nonstop Service
Between Minneapolis/St. Paul And Ottawa

EAGAN, Minn. – (May 14, 2007) – Northwest Airlines (OTC: NWACQ.PK) today announced that it will begin daily nonstop service between its Minneapolis/St. Paul hub and Ottawa, Canada on August 1, 2007.

The new service will be operated by Northwest Airlink partner Pinnacle Airlines, using Canadair Regional Jet (CRJ) aircraft, seating 50 passengers. Flight 2849 will depart Minneapolis/St. Paul at 6:52 p.m., arriving at Ottawa at 10:12 p.m. Starting August 2, flight 2848, will leave Ottawa at 8:30 a.m. and arrive at Minneapolis/St. Paul at 10:05 a.m.

In addition to the new nonstop service, Northwest currently offers three daily connecting flights between Minneapolis/St. Paul and Ottawa via its hub at Detroit. Ottawa brings to 159 the number of destinations served from Northwest’s passenger-friendly hub at Minneapolis/St. Paul.

“Northwest Airlines, as the leading U.S. airline to Canada, is pleased to expand service between Minneapolis/St. Paul and Ottawa with a new daily nonstop flight,” said Tom Bach, vice president of network planning and revenue management. “We believe that linking the Canadian capital of Ottawa with America’s heartland through our Minneapolis/St. Paul hub will open up many new opportunities for both business and leisure travelers in both countries.”

It will be nice to have more MSP-Canada flights. I wonder if they will upgrade the route from a CRJ-200 to a CRJ-900, but the route will be operated by Pinnacle, and XJ will operate CR9s.

finally good to see NW announce a new route, its been a while. Hopefully NW will add some more routes and re-establish some routes they cut. I personally would like to see CID-MEM flight! Its difficult getting to the southeast US without having to double connect on NW. Our only real choices are DL thru ATL and AA thru DFW.

Added service to YOW is always good news. Looking forward to working with that flight.

2 summers ago YOW was one of about 7 or 8 MSP test markets that was given Saturday-only service over the summer months in '05. Glad to see they've committed to the route permanently as they come closer to emerging from bankruptcy. I would love to see a Compass E175 on the route eventually.

Great new for YOW, NWA treats CDN cities well. MSP is a great airport as well.

What were some of the other routings?

MSP-YXE will get the CR9 later this year.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Really well, considering they send Mainline DC9's to places like YXE and YQR.

YQR-MSP is downgraded to 2 daily CRJ now. No more DC-9's for YQR.

YXE-MSP is 2 daily CRJ's on weekdays, and 2 daily DC-9's on Sat/Sun. YXE-MSP will get the CR9 twice daily this fall.

They could do better out of YEG, but they keep a good service with 319/20's. Would like to see DTW.

YQR rarely sees DC-9's it used to get them all the time. YXE probably won't see a mainline aircraft again for a very long time.

I'm curious about what has happened to this particular market as NW had in the past operated B752 aircraft during the peak hunting season and DC9 aircraft during the remainder of the year? It seems a bit of a drastic adjustment to down-gauge to a 50 seat CRJ aircraft! I understand NW has a need to retire some DC9 aircraft and redeploy B752 aircraft to the trans-Atantic market...have I answered my own question?

It's temporary. YXE will upgrade to the CR9 later this year.

I'm hoping they add MSP-Nassau, Bahamas (NAS) service, now that NWA has so many aircraft capable of fufilling the role it is worth NW looking into flying here from one of the largest and best serviced domestic hubs.  yes   praise

Weekend A319 anybody?

Like other said it will go to a CR9, I don't know why NW is abandoning markets like they are.. no 757 anymore that would go out full and sometimes they would have to throw a 753 on the route. The CR9 will have 12 FC seats and 64 coach seats, so its about the size of a DC-9-10.

They just got rid of 10 more A319's so don't count on it.

Is there any chance that DTW-YOW will make it to a CR9 or 175 in the next months? In any case nice to see the new flight to MSP.

Ottawa has always been a smaller NW city, so I would doubt it would be quite sometime if at all that they would get something like that. The E175's are not supposed to be around till about September. The CR9's initial routes are also already set.

The NW summer timetable (to Aug 22) has been released, and YOW will remain all CRJ to DTW/MSP.

YXE incidently will get the CR9 daily from July 16th (AM departure) with the other daily to MSP going CR9 eff Aug 1st. The daily YUL-MSP will upgrade from the CRJ to CR9 eff Aug 1st.

No CR9's planned for any other Cdn city (yet).

YYZ incidently is back up to 6 daily DC-9's (from 3 in the spring). All Airbus gone. YWG will be all 320/319/CRJ this summer (all DC-9 gone).

I hope NW continues starting and restarting flights at MSP.

While it would be nice to see E175s or CR9s to DTW, I don't think this will happen within the next 2 years. Just over a year ago YOW lost 1 of its 4 dailies to DTW, so it's nice to have NW back up to 4 frequencies here and the fact the 4th flight is to a new destination is even better.

I hear YUL-MSP will go to a CR9, which makes sense given this is a former ARJ route. It's surprising NW has downgraded Sask flights so much. Both YQR and YXE are growing strongly right now. NW is pretty much handing these pax off to AC. YQR and YXE seem like prime airports for a second US carrier to serve.

Good news for my home airport! Now if we could only get a new non-seasonal service like FRA... I might be dreaming, but hopefully, one day, that will come.

It'll happen some day SafeFlyer. A Canada-EU Open Skies agreement would sure speed up the process.

I agree, MSP is a great airport to connect at. Good for you guys in YOW getting the route. NW really has quite a good network to Canada, this just makes it a bit better.

On the YQR / YXE flights, didn't NW often fly MSP-YXE-YQR-MSP routings with the larger equipment in the past? I'm pretty sure I remember seeing that in their schedules in the not-too-distant-past. IIRC a few winters ago they were operating 1 DC9 to YXE, 1 ARJ to YQR, and 1 DC9 that did the triangle (no local traffic on YXE-YQR, of course). The CR9 isn't that big of a downgrade, although the CRJ to YQR is a bit moreso.

I also see YWG-DTW is back as a weekly nonstop over the summer... would like to see it go daily...

Yeah they did that for quite awhile. It'll be interesting to see if YXE gets upgraded at all during this year's hunting/fishing season.
