Construction Of Chinese A320 Line Has Begun!

Fri May 18, 2007 3:15 am

Quote:

Construction has started on the Airbus A320 Family Final Assembly Line (FAL) in Tianjin, following recent approval by the State Council of the Feasibility Study Report for the project. A formal ceremony was held on site in the Tianjin Binhai New Coastal District, where the FAL is to be located, in the presence of Mr. Tang Jiaxuan, State Councillor and Fabrice Brégier Airbus Chief Operating Officer.

They will start assembling aircraft in August next year. I know the intended output is 4 aircraft per month by 2011, but does anybody know what the maximum capacity of this line is?

That is good news! Will the Chinese A320 be less expensive than the European A320? And will this production plant signal an increase in A320 order in Asia? Will it be 100% identical in specification/effienciency/saftey as the European A320?

It will produce them exclusivly for the Chinese market AFAIK.

I have been hearing privately that 10 a month would be nice.

Airbus is ramping up production of the A32x in all of their factories because of an increasing backlog. That aircraft type is a workhorse for many LCCs and there is evidence that there will be more Chinese orders on the way once the line opens in China.
The plane is indeed identical.

Is this only for the A320 or the full A320 family?

Do the chinese carriers alone have orders to fill 4 a month and up to 10 a month? Would think other Asian carriers (such as Air Asia) would get their A320's here as well.

It should be the same. The Chinese also built MD-80's under license from McDonnell Douglas and I never heard of any problems unique to those A/C. If there were any problems, please let me know.

The 200 unit A320 order was the "payment" for the line.

going to get interesting to see if any of the airlines actualy take these frames or not.

Do you mean the 2 x 150 unit orders? smile

So what do you think China will do with a factory and a bunch of new A320s? confused

From what I understand this will be a FAL only so the fuselage, wings, VTP etc will all come from the sale factories and will be flown or shipped to China to be put together. One thing that interests me is whether they will need some more Belugas as they'd better get on with getting those ordered if the first parts will be required in China in just over a years time.

Whether Sino-A320s cost more or less is not the primary point. They may very well make up enough in labor costs to offset the higher transportation costs and the cost of setting up the line, but this is really about one thing: offsets.

I can't wait for China to reverse engineer the A320s. A silly and ill-thought out move on Airbus part. With all due respect for Airbus' executive staff, they are morons for not considering the precedent set in China for foreign products being built in China. The MD-90s have been reverse engineered and turned into that new Chinese regional jet, China has reverse engineered 707s (though they were purchased and brought to China), F16s (Same), automobiles, etc..

The question is whether or not they can reverse engineer the avionics -- and buy engines.

Apparently they already have. Have'nt you heard of the A320 delivered to China recently that went AWOL? You dont have to build a factory for that to happen.

Quoting ElmoTheHobo (Reply 12):

Are airbus the first western company that have decided to produce products in China? MDD did the same.

Which reflects on my initial point, if has alreay happened, assembly line or not.

I'm not saying that you need a factory to reverse engineer. A factory just makes it far easier, as it comes with the workers, equipment and designs. All you have to do is put your stamp on it and tweak it as needed.

Another great industrial blunder by Airbus. Reverse engineering is one thing, handing them the knowledge on how to run an assembly line is quite another- all for the sake of a few sales.

Why would they want to reverse engineer a plane based on mid-80s technology? They've had A320s and 737s for years. If they wanted to reverse engineer them they've had plenty of time to do it.

With due respect to a 16-20 International Relations/International Business Major, what deep experiences do you have that gives you the right to call them morons? sarcastic

I think you'll find that MD and Embraer beat Airbus to the punch there. You think the Chinese don't know how to run an assembly line? They've been building planes for a long time.

I think by the time the reverse engineering of the A320 is starting to bear fruits, the Y1 orders will already be down the pipeline.

As if anything anything can stop this.
On the other hand the chinese already know how to run assembly lines, both military and transporation.

The A320 has been available since 1988. That is nearly 20 years. Why only start now?
