Heard A Rumer About Delta From New Orleans

Fri May 18, 2007 9:47 am

Today while flying through the airport some one said Delta is getting ready to beef up their presence in New Orleans with the following service:
DELTA AIRLINES:
ATL- 4 additional daily
DFW- 2 daily
SLC- 1 additional daily (757)
BOS- 3 daily

Then a flight attendant told me while standing at check in line United was starting 767 Service to MSY!

Can anyone confirm this or know anything about this, doesnt sound right to me at all!

I'm a bit sceptical. I could see DL starting BOS-MSY on the EMB-170; plane has enough range for the route, and the capacity wouldn't be horrible - a comfortable ride, but not big enough where Delta would trash yields - they could get a decent mix with a smaller plane if managed right. As for ATL, I wouldn't be shocked at an increase, but 1-2x flights, not 4x. SLC just restarted recently; if anything, I would think a new flight would be a CRJ-900 if it has the range. And DFW, I just don't see - there's enough competition O&D wise on that route between AA and WN; DL would get slaughtered with only two daily flights going after O&D when the competition offers much better schedules, on mainline planes as well.

I would not dismiss DFW so quickly; Delta has a huge reserve of loyalty in New Orleans, and traffic between north Texas and New Orleans is substantial. With AA charging $1,072.00 round-trip for an unrestricted coach fare, there's a lot of room for competition here.

If this news came from a flight attendant I put about 10% in it being true. United just announced they are cutting domestic capacity -- I'll wait for the press releases on this one.

Perhaps DL would do well to consider making New Orleans a focus city, considering no one else is.

Flight attendants are the LAST place to get reliable information from in regards to future service--except from maybe a taxi driver. In post Katrina New Orleans where UA had one of the lower market shares anyway and where prior they only had 320s at best to LAX...a 767...not likely. You'll see DL or CO throw in a 76 before UA. Now I'd put a little more faith in the DL rumors.

Why? Once upon a time Delta flew MSY-DFW 8x daily, not to mention I'm sure this route could work due to the Delta FFs in the region.

The CRJ-900 has the range to do SLC-MSY (they use if for SLC-PIT and SLC-YYZ), but if a mainline started again, I would have expected an MD-90 or a 738.

Does MSY have the O&D passengers to really justify this?

Its all nonsense......for example, DFW is no longer a DL hub, why would DL enter the DFW-MSY market, because they have nothing else to do? As for MSY-BOS 3 times per day.....connecting two non-hub cities, right? DL's future expansion will be almost exclusively international and a build up of service at MSY is not in the plans.

As for UA using a 763ER into MSY.......note that UA is very short on longrange widebody aircraft....why would UA fly a 763 into MSY and on what route?

I think that the F/A you chatted with had one cocktail too many.

There are several New Orleans based a.net members that can surely answer your question.......but do consider that New Orleans is still recovering from Katrina and remains a smaller city that it once was.

Random thoughts:
ATL: wouldn't surprise me, primarily because there is less capacity on the route post-K (smaller a/c).
DFW: beats me, I'm sure AA's fares are exorbitant.....then again, when I go to Dallas, I usually drive.
SLC: been back for quite a while now, I believe it still DL Conn still uses a CR9 on the route. I may be wrong, but I seem to recall 2 mainline flights on the route years ago.
BOS: it'd be nice

Considering that during my 20 years here I can't recall UA running scheduled jumbos in here, I doubt they're gonna start up 763's.

Geared more towards the business market these days, with the convention market coming back. As word gets around that the vast majority of the leisure/tourist areas weren't damaged much, and those that were are back up and running, the leisure market continues to grow, as well.

This would be a good point, except that the VAST majority of the departed population are people that would not travel by airplane in the first place.

Pretty broad statement.

What I was trying to say is that New Orleans, as a origination and destination city, remains a smaller city than it once was. As you point out, convention travel (a very important part of the New Orleans travel market) is beginning to recover but still has a way to go and tourist traffic is still in the recovery phase. Some cruise ships have returned to their home ports in New Orleans, others may return in the coming year. Its still a mixed bag. Back to the original topic: while DL could add some service to its hub cities in the coming years as demand to/from MSY recovers....DL's focus in on international expansion and expanding domestic service at MSY is not a priority for DL at this time.

Quoting Tornado82 (Reply 15):

Very true, but its not unusual to see CO use a 767 on a quick IAH-MYS-IAH turn on a sub basis....especially during holiday weekends and busy travel periods.

ATL- 4 additional daily

Only if they were to downgrade existing equipment on the route to smaller planes.

Quoting Ryanrap1 (Thread starter):
DFW- 2 daily

DL doesn't even operate DFW-LAX or DFW-BOS, both of which are considerably larger stations for DL than MSY, so I strongly doubt it.

Quoting Ryanrap1 (Thread starter):
SLC- 1 additional daily (757)

Additional flight perhaps, but definitely not a 757.

Quoting Ryanrap1 (Thread starter):
BOS- 3 daily

Perhaps, though if that were to happen, it would be two flights at most.

That said, it should be pointed out that the NFL and NBA have bent over backwards to prevent their respective major league sports clubs (Saints, Hornets) from opting to relocate to Oklahoma City, San Antonio or Los Angeles over the last nearly 2 years.

checkmark  DL will likely continue seek ways to tweak or improve MSY service to their hubs (ATL, CVG, SLC & JFK) and significant focus operations in places like LAX and maybe BOS. But it will be something that will evolve over time as they re-access what domestic mainline and connection service works within their network.

...as Tom quite clearly stated, the overwhelming majority of the still-displaced from the metro area (which should NOT be confused with those counted as displaced from the city, considering that they may be 5mi up the street, but technically outside of Orleans Parish) weren't exactly the type to jet off on a holiday/business trip any given day.

Much of that was to avoid the PR debacle moreso than because of the MSY market. Don't forget that the Hornets were barely profitable pre-Katrina.

I was talking on a scheduled basis. CO doesn't schedule hub-to-spoke widebodies within the lower 48 (sans an occassional brief fling to Florida). Equipment subs aren't germane to the discussion. They've ran a 753 IAH-PIT as a sub before too, but these are unscheduled one-offs.

This rumor sounds nothing more than a rumor. Delta used to be huge in New Orleans, but I just don't see them adding that much capacity when they are cutting domestic capacity across the board.

I'll tell you that air fares to New Orleans are out of this world. I'm going back as a contractor next week and shelled out 300 bucks for a roundtrip purchased two months ahead of time. While the market tanked, the fares are sky high and will remain this way until carriers add more capacity.

Hmm... now that I think about it, wasn't there a release a while back about UA getting a significantly larger chunk of USPS air business?

Flying larger eqp here, should it prove accurate, could possibly tie into the fact that NOLA's postal service has been screaming for increased transportation capability, considering that a large percentage of their throughput was on WN-- whose service to this market remains under 35% of their former presence.
