Is that in addition to the planes they already have - I think from/operated by Atlas?

Emirates to wetlease freighter from TNT
18/May/2007

Emirates SkyCargo has announced that it will lease three Boeing 747-400ERF aircraft with a delivery schedule starting from the end of May 2007. The first of the three aircraft will be wetleased from TNT and is scheduled for delivery by 27th, May 2007.

The airline will also dry lease two aircraft from Guggenheim Aviation Partners for a ten year term. Both aircraft will be operated by TNT and will be delivered in July 2007 and February 2008.

"With our fast-expanding network and our need for capacity, the new aircraft will help us meet demands on some of our busiest routes. We are very pleased to be working with both TNT and Guggenhiem to ensure top standards of service for Emirates SkyCargo customers," said Ram Menen, Emirates Divisional Senior Vice President, Cargo.

The first of the two leased 747-400ERF aircraft will serve Asia twice weekly increasing to three operations a week later this year. Further frequencies will be introduced when the third aircraft is brought into operations next year.

The aircraft will satisfy Emirates SkyCargo's immediate requirement for capacity before delivery of its sizable freighter order of 8 Boeing 777F's and 10 Boeing 747-8F's. The airline also has option rights for an additional 10 Boeing 747-8F's. The lease will further supplement Emirates SkyCargo's existing fleet of ACMI 747s.

I continue to be amazed at the amount of lift, both pasenger and cargo, that this airline requires.

The first B747 is in TNT colours but I would expect the 2nd and 3rd will be in EK colours.

OO-THB, TNT's second frame is currently testing at BFI in full TNT colours. Although strong rumours are that these frames will be repainted into EK colours at a later moment. Don't know about their 3rd frame, which is not yet produced.

In fact, the lease will make handling their cargo much more easier and less complicated then it is now! It's just not very handy to work with USA registered aircraft and airline companies (Atlas Air). Especially the restrictions for the transport of dangerous goods is sometimes difficult and almost not understandable for their customers (who don't realize about US regulations when they book on a UAE carrier).

Now, they will deal with Dutch and Belgium regulations if the cargo will fly on a TNT registered aircraft, regulations which are much less complicated  Smile

Side question, what does this deal say about TNT's plans to operate 744Fs ? I thought TNT wanted to operate a daily (or 6x weekly) service between LGG and PVG. A single aircraft is not going to cut it.
