CX To Go Triple Daily On HKG-YVR?

Sat May 19, 2007 1:08 pm

Read it somewhere that CX will go triple daily on HKG-YVR sometime ago. Haven't heard much lately. Can anyone confirm?

Not quite triple daily but rather 17x weekly from june to October. The 3 extra flights will still be 340.

Wow there must be lots of business on this route for CX to expand at the same time as Oasis starting.

This was supposed to happen two years ago, however negotiations between Hong Kong SAR and India over a new bilateral fell through and Cathay, which derives a lot of traffic on their HKG-SFO traffic from Indian connections, cancelled the second daily.

Big market. One of the HKG-YVR flights continues on to JFK, not all the capacity terminates at YVR.

Yes, the capacity is not all to YVR yet, the YVR destined pax numbers must be enormous.

Yet, nowadays there is a lot of Korean people immigrating to Canada. So the traffic from ICN must also be enormous.

On a side note, there are many many so called astronaut dads travelling to YVR. Their family lives in Vancouver and their father goes to visit the rest of his family at least once a year. Although there are a lot of these types of people from Taiwan as well.

Was in check-out at a food store in YOW recently. Speaking to the fellow in front of me, he's involved in investment banking and works in SIN. Does YOW-EWR-SIN once a month for a 3 week stretch, then back to YOW for 9-10 days. That's a lot of FF miles ! I assume his wife appreciates the income level sufficiently to put up with the separation.

I know this has nothing to do with aviation whatsoever but I really do respect how much Cantonese (I haven't seen so many of these astronaut dads from mainland China) think and value their children's education deeply. But nevertheless sometimes I think that these men are extremely wealthy to support a family of say: a mother, and two children who are going to university. Hence, they have the ability to travel as premium pax although they are really traveling for leisure. Hence, the high level of premium seats in those CX birds (well compared to JL who has an extremely high density economy based plane flying into YVR) can make the flights so succesful.

I think to a certain degree, LAX, SFO (anticipated increase) could also be so succesful.

I have heard that Hong Kong's population decline was significant before the hand-over to China in 1997. And it's roughly about this time that I started paying attention to how CX was doing. Well other than the fact that their fleet was consisted of only two types (L-1011 and B747).

I know this is not totally related to the topic, but I was wondering if any of you has any thoughts on whether CX would consider at some point adding to its HKG-YVR a MEX tag-on... perhaps 2 or 3x weekly. I am assuming CX would have fifth freedom rights. I think the demand for direct flights between HKG and MEX exists... it is just a matter of developing the route. Thank you guys.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

I think so too. I believe there is a market for CX to fly to Mexico.

HKG-YVR is one of CX's most profitable/busiest routes. I suppose they need extra flights

Not surprise considering there's lots of Chinese (from HKG) living in that area. Good news for them.

Howdy all,

Wow there ar e quite a few passangers there! Sounds to me like a good fit for the whalejet. I think that if things keep going this way (and they shoudl as traffic is expected to increase by 30% worldwide- or so I hear) they will order (someday) the 380! Maybe they will order 20 frames of the 380 one day?

Peace

Elvis777

Or maybe the traffic is only in the summer? Or maybe frequency over capacity makes more sense economically since it gives the customer and THE airline more choices?

Sigh .

20 sound right, plus YVR will eventually be slot restricted during the peak period (it's already at near capacity now, correct if wrong), either 748i or A380 will be needed, the way I see it, CX will need either VLA for LHR (6?), LAX (6?), SFO (2?), YVR/JFK (6?), the YVR-JFK tag can also pick up some premium passengers to fill seats from HKG-YVR.

That would be great, perhaps one of their day time flight with can make another tag to MEX (3/4 weekly), the problem comes from Mexico themselves as far as granting 5th freedom rights, JL tried to add frequencies of their NRT-YVR-MEX flights, MH had to cancel MEX-LAX sector for the same reason.

There're many Asia-Latin America passengers who don't want the hassles of flying through US, but other carriers are already targeting this now, ie QR, EK, KE (maybe with SA from JNB) so this move might be too late, going to Mexico, quite a few fly through YYZ and to Asia.

We can expect more expansion to the US once the 777-300ERs start to come online and provide additional capacity. At the moment the fleet is pretty maxed out.

So Vincewy, are you saying that the Mexican government will not authorize JL to fly more than 2x weekly NRT-YVR-MEX with traffic rights? That is really terrible. MH and LAX is more understandable because we have a restrictive bilateral with the U.S. and MH was moving a lot of pax in 744s damaging AM and MX.

Mexico is usually very restrictive in terms of traffic rights. JL has had their current 2 per week 5th freedom service YVR-MEX for well over 30 years. I believe that's also why BA only operates 4 times a week LHR-MEX while all other major European carriers serving Mexico (e.g. AF/KL/LH/IB) operate daily.

Why is this? All the other major European carriers can fly daily but not BA? Does MEX dislike BA?

I recall someone who seemed to be more familiar with the regulatory situation between the UK and Mexico mentioning that BA would like to increase the LHR-MEX frequency but couldn't due to restrictions in the air services agreement.

Why only BA could have problems? Is there something restrictive on the Mexico-UK bilateral agreement?

Could CX fly YVR-MEX with the 5th right? If MX flies YVR-MEX, an alternative is the code-share agreement.

I don't know the bilateral, but it seems to me that the Mexican government is unwilling to grant BA authority to fly more than 4 or 5x weekly because AM has not been able to get LHR slots. Take this with a grain of salt... this is a theory I have read here.

Not that many. There are STILL plenty of ex-Hong Kong people in Canada especially Vancouver and LOTS of Hong Kong people visit Canada especiall Vancouver many times per year

Yes, I know something about it. So far I know if AM wants to fly London, they must go to operate LGW instead LHR, right?
