Can You Visit JFK Or EWR Tower?

Mon May 21, 2007 7:49 am

I'll be flying to NY in early June with my brother. He's an assistant air traffic controller here in Norway, and would like to visit a major airport to see their operation.

How do you go about asking for permission? And is there any chance this will be permitted nowadays?

Hey,
Right now its a little tough. With the threat level where it is right now, we cant let any non-essential personel in. If it goes down then you have to call ahead and set it up.

Being a Foreign National, Id say right now no. But hey, give them a call when you get here and ask.

According to my FAR/FC 2007 book, you are actually encouraged to do so.

However, we all know that people from Norway (or Iran or Canada for chrissakes) aren't welcomed here in the US after 9/11, so YMMV.  frown

All you can do is ask. Since he is in the profession his chances might be better. I'd write an e-mail to the local NY ATC Office and ask.

I went up an spent an evening in the JFK tower back in the summer of 2005, but I was interning at JetBlue at the time and it was set up through a friend there. Everyone up there was super nice and professional, definetly an amazing experience.

There is something called Operation Rain Check, where any pilot in the U.S. can set up an appointment to visit any ATC facility. I guess that doesn't help you much though, sorry.

If I'm ever in NY, I might do that.

I'd have to agree with this - you need to be a US citizen to get into a tower these days. However, since your brother works as a controller, things might be different. I'd recommend that he try and get someone from the agency that runs the ATC in Norway to give the FAA a call and try and set up a tour that way, rather than do it himself - I seriously doubt that he'd get in that way.

For what it's worth, I haven't heard of even US citizens getting tower tours at JFK or EWR either.

Best bet.....and do it today!

Have brother get in contact with the JFK/EWR Tower folks and announce the desire to visit....let the offical visit paperwork and such take place, you might just get authorization, otherwise

Might want to check into that now a days, security levels change quite often...........assume nothing.

The only time I've heard of people getting into towers is school tours or if they are in ATC training at a college, etc. But since 9/11, I'm not sure what the procedure is. I've been into the operations tower at PIT and onto the runways during a field check but that's about it so far.

You can do it. It is more calling ahead. I was in TRACON a few weeks ago for about an hour in NY at the Westbury facility which some may be familiar with from the movie Pushing Tin.

Also on another note, if you look at recent JFK pics Sam Chui has pictures from the tower there. If he can pay his way into JFK's tower than I am sure that a certified person can get in there. Now I must sit back and await the Chui defense force to blast me for my comments.

The flight team at my university was set up to visit the DC TRACON a couple of months ago, and we were completely cleared to do so. Turns out that we were cancelled on a week or two in advance - either because of a security issue or because the guy we were visiting had more important things to do (I can't remember which).

My point here is that it's not impossible to get in to visit ATC facilities - you just have to find the right pathways and set something up well enough in advance.

That would be the way to do it. However, I would expect that although he might be able to get in, you would be out of luck.

Yea Call the tower.

All depends on the security level. Right now we cant let anyone non essential in, but again as IAHFLYR said, that changes almost daily. (Who knows why, I guess some TSA desk jockey read somewhere on a forum that has a member that might possibly be a member of a questionable organization wrote something that might possible be taken to mean....you get the picture).

Hope you can get in though, its always great meeting other people from the aviation industry to see how ya'll do things.

Definitely pursue a tour of the tower at JFK or EWR. I was able to see the new ATC at PHX by winning the tour in a charity auction. They let me take pictures, although I chose not to post them all.
