Sadly, I think it's going to remain a park forever.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again....the Seaplane Pilot's Association should open a seaplane base immediately adjacent to Meigs and use it like crazy. Perhaps an enterprising individual could buy some Grumman Mallards and re-introduce service to the downtown area.

In addition, they should hold a huge seaplane fly-in at least once a year, just to spite Dick.  yes

Or city growth might start in on the park.

I would like to see this reopened though  Sad

I just pulled this off of Google Earth. I don't know if you can blow it up, but there are still planes on the field. I don't know what date this image was created.

It still shows Soldier Field under reconstruction, so I am going to say this shot is at least 3 years old.
From my understanding, all concrete has been removed, no chance of it EVER returning to use an airport.

Yes, took a stroll out there a few weekends ago. There is nothing really left, other than the terminal building. The Island is going to be part of the Olympic festivities, so it's future as a park is sealed (unless of course, Chicago doesn't get 2016).

There have been various concerts there during the summer, I think it was last year that I was this close to seeing O.A.R. there. Looking at the pics in 2H4's post, anybody know where the bands setup. That would have to be a cool place to see a show, probably much better than the hellhole in Tinley Park. But I'd much rather see Meigs back there though. On my intro flight lesson (summer of 2000) out of Palwaukee, we got to do a low pass over CGX and it was amazing!

Probably in that big amphitheater on the right side of the frame.

Since I was the Landscape Architect for Soldier Field, I can accurately say that Google's image was taken Summer 2002.

That guy ranks right up there with people I would love to see eat a spoon full of dog crap. You are what you eat so I guess it would be fitting. There was no reason to kill that airport.

I'm afraid you Meigs Field enthusiasts have to face reality. Look what happened to our favourite airport:

There are still seaplane operations conducted here, both at the east end and more visibly the west end (bottom of pic)

There was a legitimate reason to close it - Daley wanted to build the park. I may not agree with the reason, but it was legitimate.

The way in which it was done, however, was completely illegitimate, cowardly, and wrong.

It seems bad of me to wish this, but I really hope that some 172 has an engine failure while flying along the lakefront and has to make an emergency landing in the park (it would be a very good place for one).

Why did all MS flight sim flights start at Meigs Field by default?
Even in later versions that included the B747 for example, it would still start at Meigs although you'd never make it out of there with a 747.

While I find the closure of Meigs sad, I think Daley has done good for the city, and that is seen by the overwhelming support in his relection.

Yes, he is basically a dictator, but sometimes that's what's needed in a democracy ruined by "special interest" groups.

Thing we wouldn't have without Daley in Chicago:

1) Boeing's HQ
2) Millenium Park (yea, I know many of his buddies got rich, but still, we have a huge lakefront asset now)
3) O'Hare Modernisation Plan
4) USOC 2016 Bid City
5) Numerous parks and greenspaces, making Chicago one of the most beautiful cities in the US
