Three Hour Nonstop On A Q400?

Tue May 22, 2007 9:09 am

In looking at some schedules I stumbled upon a thrice-weekly flight on South African Express from JNB to FBM - three hours on a Q400. I didn't even know turbos could operate such long sectors? Does anyone know what kind of penalty SAX has on this flight? Or better still has anyone EXPERIENCED this flight?

Three hours! Egad.

That certainly is a long flight on a 400. But, I have had a 3 plus hour flight on a Dash 8-200 once, and that was not very comfortable. I think the Q400 is a bit more comfy, although I have not flown on one yet. I have heard plenty of positives though. It seems that most of the complaints come from 3 hr CRJ flights. I have done the CRJ 3 hour trip, and my back about snapped in half when I got out of my seat.

Why say that..? I did 5 hours in a Saab 340 several times... Of course it was a ferry flight with just me and the flight crew....and max fuel

The mighty Q400 can do trips like this all day long. 1000 miles is nothing difficult for that bird. Published range is 1,567 mi (2,522 km) apparently with a standard load.

depends how they configure the plane and how clausterphobic you get. I know on QX's old layout they were super comfy (my understanding they have since added seats, haven't ridden recently and can't comment). I've been on some long CR7/9 sectors and if they have good seats (OO) its really not that bad. If they buy the cheapest ones available (YV) then a short flight (CLT-CHS) will leave you in pain, and a longer leg (CLT-SYR) may require a visit to the chiropractor.

Recall its a turboprop so a 3hr flight on one is going to be alot shorter distance wise than a 737 or A320.

Two and a half hour flight on America West Express (dba. Mesa) was one of the worst flight of my life, if not the worst. I agree with you.  Smile

JNB-FBM is posted at 1006 miles, which would probably be 25-30 minutes shorter on a jet. That Q400 is a speedy bird for a turboprop!
