Qantas A380 - First Suites, New Flat Skybed!

Wed May 23, 2007 4:40 am

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,21778270-662,00.html

In a nutshell -

* It is believed first-class passengers will have private cubicles, while business class will feature a new Skybed that is fully horizontal.

* Mr Borghetti would not comment on the first and business-class plans, but said economy passengers could look forward to a more comfortable seat.

"It's got unique features in it that currently don't exist," he said.

"The economy class seat probably has the biggest change that's happened to such seats for two decades."

* Qantas expects to start A380 passenger services in October next year, with a Melbourne to Los Angeles flight.

Well, well, well... the game is certainly afoot!

And - this just to hand -

http://www.smh.com.au/news/travel/lo...13.html?page=fullpage#contentSwap2

* Newson's first project with Qantas was the Skybed. He has since refitted the airline's first-class cabins and is working on the interiors of the A380, which, he revealed during the course of publicity for the airport lounges, will have an on-board spa

Shades of Virgin Atlantic?

Either way it's going to be superb!

Fantastic news!!! They are going for revolution rather than evolution on their A380's which is exactly the right thing to do. Can't wait to see it unveiled now.

Hmmmm.....my old man went to Britain on a BOAC Stratocruiser back in when....1956? and it was double decking in comfort.

Nothing new under the sun....although private compartments does seem like a nice idea for them what can afford it.

The glory days of flying. Isn't it good that airlines seem to be getting back to the sort of style and comfort for their pax though? Definitely a step in the right direction.

What will be interesting to see is what the other A380 operators are doing. We essentially know that the SQ A380 will follow on from their new 773's. So that is definitely increasing the comfort at the front of the plane. I'm sure the rest are considering things along the same line as what Qantas is/

I'm interested to see what the new Y class seats are like, if they are talking them up that much... obviously they've been decided...

Also, I wonder if the product will go into the 744s and the rest of the fleet - and more the point - when!

EK has said they too will have private suites.

But that's old hat. Airlines like Emirates and Jet already provide those in First (EK on the A345 and 9W on the 773).

I wonder if they've gone for a CX style seat? Surely on the A380 they can afford to have an increased pitch and slightly mroe recline built into them. Will be very interesting to see.

Or will they upgrade them at all?? The A380, while not being a perfect replacement for the 744, sort of fills the niche to allow Qantas to start retiring some of the older ones in the fleet. The 744ER's will surely have to be upgraded though because they are only a handful of years old.

Quoting Jaysit (Reply 7):

Well it sort of depends what they are building into their suites doesn't it? I think there will be alot of oneupmanship going on when the A380's finally start to see revenue service.

yes you see the inconsistency there only available on the A345

Hopefully a more reliable IFE system

They most probably will upgrade the entire fleet. No point having a few aircraft fitted out with the new product. Announcements on upgrades will be sometime in August according to QF employees

Not all the 744's will see the upgrades. I owuld expect the oldest 744's that are being replaced by A380's will not see the upgrades.

Maybe not, but the older 744s can be kept in service while the newer ones are upgraded in all classes, plus a Y+ addition.

The older 744s may then head for conversion to freighters if QFs plans in that area do well. QF keeps their older planes in very good nick, which made it difficult for them to sell their SPs a while back. Might as well take advantage of their maintenance investment in the older 744s and move them to freight.

I wouldnt be suprised if they keep the older 744's in a 2 class config and run them domestically in place of the 743.

The 743's will be retired pretty much straight away and QF is doing well using the 747 in and out of PER from the SYD, MEL and soon BNE. They do have the odd 744 and it would be good keeping the IFE and a premium product available on that flight.

But their new product sounds promising  Smile

QF and EK therefore probably most of them. No wonder BA is talking up buying the A380-they have no choice whatsoever.

As a previous writer has pointed out BA (BOAC) were doing this light years ago.One wonders why they did not order them sooner?-- Unless they feel they can offer the same level of luxury in the 747-8I? Now that would be interesting. But they could not (unless 9 across) offer a better economy seat. Or is this why the one buyer to date forced the super stretched version of the 8I? Hmmmm very complicated.

I have heard that the B744's will start being retired in 4-5 years. 5 new B737-800's have been ordered & 5 B737-400's will not be retired as originally planned to ensure QF keep their 65% domestic market share, with Tiger starting at years end. Also Melbourne to China (probably PVG) will be the next international sector fro the Victorian capital, probably using the A322's that are coming at years end. QF are also looking at returning to South America in their own right - probably to Santiago but also possibly to Buenos Aires? Currently currency restrictions are preventing services to Chile. Also SFO services will be daily hopefully by the time the first A380's arrive. Speaking of the A380, it will be back here in Sydney early next month for further trials!

Cheers - BZF

I guess this only shows that airlines that have ordered the A380 will move in the right direction contrary to those here who keep saying it will be no different than most B747s... I expect great things on most A380s and I doubt I'll be disappointed... this just shows how airlines are going to use those amazing planes.... Hope the details will be unveiled soon...

..the routes BA want to potentially use the A380 don't directly compete with the QF's and EK's....

We will see what BA does. They seem to have rejected the 777-300er -a direction most have taken.Other than one airline split order its all A380. I do not think that its impossible that BA will go for a major A380 order (but they may not). However if they do -and bypass the 747-8 I believe that the pax version will be in deep doo doo.

What will it look like; a small cubicle with area to change and another to be sprayed with mist & then blow dried? Perhaps it will also have temperature controlled air with a oxygen burst to make passengers feel extra refreshed. What about using it during turbulence though?

Sounds pretty good. I wonder what the new and improved economy seats will look like, since they've been the same for quite a while now. Hopefully it will be a good improvement. The First and Business classes sound good too, but i don't think I'll be flying in them anytime soon.

I doubt it's literal...

It probably means a spa as in "Molton Brown Travel Spa" which is essentially a place to have a massage etc. So they'll probably have an area like that - that's my take on it anyway...
