TAM Prepares MIA-GIG; SAA Continues MIA Talks

Thu May 24, 2007 2:16 am

Short but interesting article from today's Miami Today News:

http://www.miamitodaynews.com/news/070524/story5.shtml

It confirms what we've all known about TAM: they will start year-round, daily non-stop service between Miami and Rio de Janeiro this winter, which will be their fourth daily flight to Miami. It also updates on the continuing push for MIA to bring SAA back. Given SAA's current precarious financial situation, I really don't think it is a priority for them until they improve their finances.

Can SA codeshare with AA, I think they cant cuz of Star Alliance.

SAA is a microcosm of South Africa itself since Pres Mandela retired, unfortunately

Star has a general policy of attempting to codeshare intra-alliance whenever possible, but has no binding capability to prevent an SA/AA codeshare

Congratulations for TAM and it shows that with our without AA partnership TAM can keep substantive operations in MIA due to the heavy O&D traffic MIA-Brazil.

We all wait for the first MIA-JFK service in addition to the already mentioned LAX-GRU to be established after consolidation of the JJ-UA codeshare cooperation.

Any chance JJ could hire XJET to fly some connections?

I'm thinking ATL and MCO. . . perhaps other places (CLT?) as well.

edit: out of MIA that is. . .

Doubt it. TAM doesn't need feed at MIA. All it does is drag down yield.

I remember in thre early 1990's when SAA started once a week 744 service CPT-MIA-CPT. Then twice, three times and daily at the end, when they moved the gateway to Atlanta with the Delta deal. With the 3 A340 at Jet Airways coming back soon, Miami would be viable. IF AA wasn't so blinded by Asia it would send a few 777 to Capetown from Miami.

JJ plans are to start this new MIA service in DEC 07. That´s one of the motives why they are trying to bring new A330 this year.

Cheers,

Mark thanks for sharing, let's hope that they in the near future confirm also the daylight with stops in the Northeast. It also provide an interesting and strong connection between GIG, Northeast of Brazil (SSA, REC, NAT, FOR mainly) and MIA !

Friday will be an investors meeting.. i hope they announce this !

There was a thread sometime ago where a it was stated that the reason for SA dropping it's plans to start the route were driven by a lack of support from UA. Seems UA were not interested in co-operating with SA at ORD for various reasons such as potential loss of trans-Atlantic traffic.SA would find that through connection fares over ORD would not be appealing to consumers and the route could not sustain itself as an O&D at ORD.

Victor and Felipe,

On the 2007 budged 02 brand new A332 are coming from Airbus in DEC07. and the route GIG/MIA/GIG is in the 2007 budged, so it is not being done any extra effort to operate this route.

The efforts are being done to bring extra A332 for other route to join both A345 already discussed. Till end of the year 05 new widebody to join the fleet, including these 02 birds of DEC.

JJMNGR,

So we can conclude that the budget is done on a 2 aircraft operating GIG-MIA-GIG flights ?

Some other JJ sources said yesterday to me that a GIG-MAO flight will begin later this year also, do you have any info on this ?
