Spirit To Start FLL-MGA

Thu May 24, 2007 4:43 pm

As discussed in the Central American thread, and now official. Spirit will begin non-stop service between Ft. Lauderdale and Managua on 2 August 2007, operating 3x a week. Service will be daily effective 15 November 2007. Managua is Spirit's fourth destination in Central America, joining Guatemala City, San Jose, and San Pedro Sula. It isn't the last. Panama City is next...

Spriti To Start FLL-MGA

You might want to fix the thread title, so it reads Spirit and not Spirti.  Wink

I already read something on an FLL-MGA route on Costaricaaviation.com. There are people over there who have their reservations on FLL-MGA becoming successful.

If they have reservations, they obviously don't know that Miami-Managua is the third busiest O&D market between the United States and all of Central America. The only two busier markets are LAX-SAL and MIA-SJO.

That's true. Maybe it seemed to them unlikely because the flight isn't going to MIA, despite FLL's proximity to MIA.

I never knew LAX-SAL was such a big market. MIA-SJO is I guess a no-brainer, especially given the huge presence of AA down here in SJO.

Spirit seems to be announcing new routes to Latin America and the Caribbean weekly!!

I hope this route is a success for them. Perhaps a few of the Eastern Caribbean islands will be targeted from FLL next!!

And just how is FLL's customs/immigrations facility going to handle all this additional traffic? NK is already spilling over to terminal 3 at certain hours of the day.....Is NK spacing out their international arrivals?

Yes, they are spacing out arrivals. They no longer have banks. The MGA flight, for example, is a redeye, and arrives in FLL very early in the morning (before 6AM). Still, though, FLL needs to expand their INS facilities. It is too small. FLL has more international traffic than airport's more than double its size, like DEN.

From the press release:

Managua, Nicaragua will be Spirit’s fifth Latin American destination served. Earlier this year, Spirit started service to San Jose, Costa Rica and Guatemala City, Guatemala and recently announced new service to San Pedro Sula, Honduras and Lima, Peru.

They do not mention Chiclayo, Peru. Has this service been canned before it even began?

No, it was never announced, Spirit just applied for it. It is planned to start in the winter.

I may be wrong, but I seem to remember alot of the MGA-Florida traffic going to FLL. Anyways, I know Sweetwater will appreciate this flight  dollarsign

Either way, good news for Spirit, this will be a good route for them and their ever expanding FLL operation  checkmark

There might be a lot going to FLL, but the majority of the Nicuraguan population in South Florida lives in Little Havana, which nowadays has more Nicuraguans than Cubans.

I agree and wonder if FLL will allow them to expand any further.
