Travel Advisory City of Derry Airport - Cancellations and Diversions for Friday 25th May 2007
City of Derry Airport Authority has been advised by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) that it must suspend operations from midnight tonight, Thursday 24th May. This is in place while variations to safety regulations are being reviewed by the CAA and the Airport Authority. Members of the public are advised to contact their airlines for updates regarding flight cancellations and diversions will become operational from Friday 25th May. Updated information is available from the City of Derry Airport website www.cityofderryairport.com.
Ryanair have cancelled all flights to and from the airport for Friday 25th May 2007 with an update expected by 2.00pm on Friday. British Airways have also rescheduled their flights to operate through Belfast International. Dublin and Glasgow routes will be affected and passengers should check-in as City of Derry Airprot as normal for coach transfers to Belfast.
A spokesperson for City of Derry Airport indicated that discussions are continuing with the CAA to have the suspension reversed. “The City of Derry Airport is 100% committed to maintaining the highest safety standards. Following the public enquiry in April, the Airport Authority sought clarification from the CAA on a number of matters relating to existing variations with an expectation of continued operation. While this an exceptional step by the CAA the Airport is confident that a position can be reached to ensure the airport is operational as soon as possible. The public will be advised immediately of any update and it is understood airlines will provide further updates on Friday”.
Negotiations continued into the evening of Thursday 24th May 2007 between City of Derry Airport and the CAA with the final outcome being an immediate meeting in London on Friday to review the situation. The City of Derry Airport has operated under agreed variations with the CAA for the past number of years pending the commencement of the safety works. Compliance with the existing safety variations has enabled the City of Derry Airport to manage over 1million passengers over the past four years.
