SQ Flies To SYD With A380 - Which Flight Number?

Sun May 27, 2007 12:27 pm

Hi All

I am trying to make a redemption booking with SQ for SYD SIN DXB SIN SYD early November 2007
and was wondering if anyone has any info as to what flight numbers SIN SYD SIN that SQ is looking to
run the A380 on ?

I had heard (perhaps a rumour) that it was SQ219 SIN SYD and SQ220 SYD SIN ..... does anyone at SQ
have any real info ? and is there a planned start date lurking around somewhere ?

Many thanks
Industrybuff !

They would be foolish if it were those flights. As it requires the jet to sit O/N in SYD. Considering its SQ221 and SQ222 that are the flights with better loads and yield, it would be prudent to place it on those flights.

By the same token however, as it will be the first route for familiarity purposes and crew training, what I have suggested might not be the case.

Look for the flight which can link up to the LHR flight. I believe the first A380 will fly SYD-SIN-LHR-SIN-SYD and so on....

When SQ add LHR (probably in March) to the WhaleJet rotation, that will be SQ322/317. However, that doesn't guarantee that the initial flights to SYD will match up before LHR is upgauged.

To do a daily rotation with just 1 aircraft, i guess it shd be SQ221/SQ232.. of course they can do SQ222 as well, but they aircraft will be rotated out on SQ231... Seeing SQ so rigid/constant with their schedules, I wld expect a 221/232 til they have more..

Spot on. I spoke to an SQ regional manager recently, and he said that it will be SQ221/SQ232, so that the aircraft has a longer layover in SIN over the introduction, to iron out any bugs that may come up.

He suggested that it was less than ideal in terms of connections from preferred marketsetc, but would operate for Northern Winter 2007 (ie. the shortest of the schedule period - 21 weeks).

8:30p SIN 2 5:55a+1 SYD 1 SQ 221
11:30a SYD 1 5:45p SIN 2 SQ 232

Best guess this early would be sometime in November. Until Airbus get a production certificate, no dates will be fixed.

I thought they were first about to add flights to LHR then SYD

IIRC the first flight from Singapore will be late December or Early January. I thought I heard that on this forum

MEL will get a B77W from Nov 2007, and may receive an A380 mid-2008.

SQ want to use the A380 on SQ227/228, but they may need to compromise initially, and use it on a service that would provide immediate turnaround.

I understand the B77W will operate the midnight service ex-MEL.
SQ 217/ SQ 218 arrive MEL 1915 depart MEL 0050

SQ may then look to interchange aircraft on SQ227/228 and SQ237/238 to better utilise the A380.

Currently
SQ 227/228 arrives MEL 0615, departs 1550
SQ 237/238 arrives 0855, departs 1010

Using the A380 on 237/238 is tight, with a 75 minute turn.

So the option for the A380 would be

SQ237 arriving at 0855, then departing as SQ228 at 1550, or better still...

SQ228 arriving at 0615, and departing as SQ238 at 1010

There is unlikely to be any seats available for frequent flier redemption especially not on the A380.

I have also heard this flight combination SQ221/SQ232, I would consider that the first flight would be the daytime departure from Singapore SQ219.

I can't wait until the schedule is released so I can book a flight on it.
Why fly non stop when you can connect

Thanks everyone for the responses...

Im a little concerned that the A380 may not be deployed to SYD until end DEC 07 and early JAN 08...
I guess the whalejet will do quite a few rotations on the SIN JKT SIN route for crew training purposes or
over to KUL..... but are these airports A380 ready ? Perhaps SYD will need to be the crew training route !

KUL is installing some A380-capable gates as we speak. As for CGK, god bless them as that airport is as screwed up as ever. Is A380 even in the vocab for the airport authorities there? Maybe someone like HB-IWC or Mandala can enlighten us.

I think it would be foolish of SQ to miss the peak Xmas travel period between Australia and UK. The A380 would be the perfect aircraft to carry that humungous plane load of passengers!

I thot SQ has confirmed that their first commercial WhaleJet flight would be SYD..? If that's the case then I suppose crew training etc would be done on SIN-SYD vv..

I gather Malaysian Airports has already completed the first gate at the Satellite Terminal C at KUL for the arrival of the A380 since MAS seems to be proceeding with its own delivery in 2008. One of the runway upgrades has also been completed with work starting on the second runway.

On a side-note - my last LHR-KUL-LHR flights on MH also departed/arrived at the new Heathrow Terminal 3 A380 extension pier which features double-height boarding areas.

There will be no scheduled regional pax familiarity flights for the A380. It's first pax carrying service will be the inaugural to SYD.

Yeah Im one of those also trying to cash in my miles for a trip on the A380. I expect to have to wait at least a few months to get availability. Might just have to buy a normal ticket. The only thing is if you are lucky to get availability now on the flight which shows as a 744 and then they do an AC change but you would have to be very lucky for that to happen.

Thanks to all those that replied I have now got a new plan

To cut a long story short, had a waitlist since NOV 06 for a flight ex AUST via SIN to Spain. SQ wouldnt
confirm the waitlist because they changed the plane to B777-300ER and are now charging more points
for J class..... I wrote a complaint as I had miles expiring each quarter as I waited for the flight to be
confirmed. Got a call a few days ago and I was offered a great resolution - SQ would reinstate the miles
I had cancelled, and offer me a redemption seat to LHR in n J class .... so I have to take that soon -
which means that I will miss the A380 ...... hopefully QF have them ontime next year ........

all in all a great resolution..... SQ really came to the party and resolved this issue.

Cheers
